Talking Re: oil through frame?!?!

About oil--fluids--through the frame rails, the M1B McLaren routed engine coolant through the frame, too. We had to be careful not to lift ourselves out of the seat by pushing up on the frame tube when the engine was hot. Ouch!

You could argue . . . surely not . . . doing such a thing isn't smart. But when designing a race car, one of the objects is to reduce weight. We can all relate to that concept. One way to do this is to use a component or assembly for more than one purpose. A great example of this is using the engine, sometimes the transaxle, as a structural member. A more common example is using the chassis as a ground. I'm sure there are other examples.

A funny one I recall is Smoky Yunick's trick of filling part of the roll cage with fuel! Dangerous and illegal, yes. No one could figure out how his car could go longer before having to pit.
