Hi Malc,

Yes, the tanks fill much better now. Whilst the bigger bore filler pipe certainly helps, the improved filling may be due to the vents I've fitted to the rear of the fuel tanks. I fitted a boss to the top rear inside corner of each fuel tank, then ran 8mm braided fuel hose to the top of the bulkhead (highest point possible) & fitted rollover valves & filters. Sometime in the future I may also fit a similar setup to the front of the tanks.

Regds,

Hi Julian,
great work, great car.
I have a DAX40, with fuel filling problems due to poor tank venting arrangement. I was thinking along the same lines. Can you tell me what roll over valves / filters you have used?

I notice in your roll bar pictures that the roll bar would intrude into the fuel tank space in my car. Are your tanks shorter or have you modified them? In the DAX the tanks go right back to the bulkhead location.

Dave,

Enc pics of the roll-over valve spec & the filters. TBH I can't remember where I got the vents or the filters from, ISTR I got them at the Autosport show. The valve fits tight in the hose at the very top & the hose fits tight in the filter.

Re the roll bar intruding into the fuel tank space, on the GTD there is a gap between the chassis & the inside of the fuel tanks. I only had to modify the coolant pipes, the fuel tanks needed no modification.

Hope this helps.

How time flies....

10 years later & still going strong! Have had many very enjoyable road & track miles since completing this car, plus lots of fun re-engineering and improving the spec to my liking.

Regards to all,
Julian

Julian, you mentioned in your earlier posts that your exhaust noise was 99Db. How did you manage that?. I have a CAV GT40 with twin oval mufflers and failed miserably the noise test at Castle Coombe a while back. Is that a bespoke muffler or off the shelf product?.

I've managed to squeeze through a 99Db test a couple of times. I have found Noise testing at Castle Coombe always slightly tougher than elsewhere. I know how frustrating it can be if you get a fail....

I personally fabricated the single oval silencer, with perforated tube baffles. The night before the event I re-pack with Acousta-fil.

In addition to fresh wadding I fit a pair of extra silencers on the end of the tailpipes.

Merlin Mild Steel Racing Muffler from Merlin Motorsport

I have then welded a pair of Supertrapp disc silencers on the end of the cans & can add discs if required but if I'm lucky this is not always necessary.

All the above works for me, but it's a real PITA & not pretty. The wadding will only last one day & the extra silencers will strangle the performance. However Castle Combe is a great circuit & well worth the extra hassle.

Had a very enjoyable track day at a local airfield over the weekend, probably the last one of the season for me.

Looking forward to another season of track days & road trips over the forthcoming summer, I’ve had an enjoyable few weeks giving the car a very careful service, inspection and clean. Everything is in fine fettle!

A full fluid flush & change required two gallons of engine oil, three gallons of coolant, 3.5 litres of transaxle oil & a litre of DOT 5.1 ! Big thanks to https://www.opieoils.co.uk/search.aspx for their swift service

Brake calipers & discs were carefully stripped & cleaned, whilst the discs were removed I like to check & inspect the drive pegs. I’m a great believer in running a spanner check over the car periodically.

I upgraded the alternator pulley to a larger diameter version. The belt doesn’t ‘chirp’ on startup anymore & the under drive will extend the alternator lifespan.

Looking forward to some track time soon!

Looks great Julian, glad to hear you are still enjoying the car after such a long ownership. I am in the same boat as you but only half through my restoration. Am fitting a FZQ and fuel injection to my car currently but project got cut short in momentum when I unintentianally cut off my little finger last year (nothing to do with the car project). But yours looks so good its encouraging me to get back onto it!

Thanks for the kind words Malcolm, I can still vividly remember driving out to see you & your car when I first got my car (pre rebuild) & that was 23 years ago o_O. ZFQ & FI sounds like a great project. Sorry to hear about your finger, I hope it doesn't hinder you too much & hope for a swift recovery.

We had our first track outing this year at the weekend at a local airfield. The British weather did us proud & despite our expectation of rain we had a really warm sunny day!

It was great to give the car a shakedown & bed the brakes in. Just a few minor tweeks needed but otherwise the car feels great & looking forward to getting some more track time over the forthcoming season.

As part of my usual inspections, I regularly check the CV joint bolt torques as they occasionally come loose & I’ve taken the opportunity to address this issue.

There are 6 no M8 x 55mm 12.9 grade socket head bolts in each CV joint as standard. On closer inspection & after testing for clearance, I upgraded to 65mm long bolts, giving a few MM of thread protrusion for good measure.

In addition to the extra thread length I decided to lock wire the bolts, & the first step is of course to drill & chamfer the socket heads to accept the safety wire.

Drilling 12.9 grade bolts is a whole heap of fun, especially when there’s 24 to get through. After making a suitable drilling jig, & purchasing a big box of 3mm TCT drills & a new pot of drilling/cutting compound, I used a low speed drill with lots of patients & successfully drilled & chamfered all 24 bolts. Some military grade swearing also seemed to help.

I torqued the new bolts in place & put a few miles on the car, then removed, cleaned, loctited & re-torqued the bolts before lock wiring in place.

I’ve got a track day booked at Castle Combe in a few weeks so will look forward to seeing the results of my latest efforts.
