Part 2 of Don's Mk IV Build

The real problem with ZF is input shaft vs output shaft height is about 3", ZFQ is slightly better with its small amount of hypoid & T44 has about 1.75". It doesn't really effect SBF as originals ran very small flywheel, MKII with FE has large flywheel which is a major problem in your road going scenario, Ive got around that with offset reduction starter & 289 ring gear dia for my FE.

I wanted to use off the self parts as much as possible like your original plans for your T44R. If I had gone the T44 route from your numbers I would have ended up with that 1"+ lower drive shaft connection point thus reducing my angle greatly. I think you finished that T44R project correct?

May be for the next project.

No the T44R is some way off yet, too many other distractions, who said retirement gave you more time to do the things you like, they were wrong!

...The axle angle is about 23 deg. at full drop and about 18 at normal drive height... Talking with the Drive Shaft Shop they suggested High Speed CV Boots...

Those numbers sound a bit high. I will have to sneak out to check mine, but I think they were maybe half of that- I want to say either 6° or 9°, but my memory is horrible so don't quote me. The bottom of my bellhouse is level with the bottom plane of the chassis of my Mk I with a small block (shallow wet sump), ZF, and normal starter/flywheel. Did you chat with TDS about those angles?

Another thing to consider is did you get the correct length of axle as well. I didn't initially and had to give TDS my flange-to-flange measurements at extremes and at neutral ride height. They then sent me appropriate half shafts. If your axle is too short, it may be pulling the cage against the stamped cover and causing your problem.

I have heard of sandrail guys running extremely high angles, but I don't imagine they are running the same hardware we are.

Everyone that has a GT knows how much fun these cars are to drive! Fun!

And once you get all these nagging things sorted, they are the ultimate amnesiac, at least for me. All I need to do to forget all the hassle and crap of the build is to hit the starter, select a gear, and let the sound system wipe away any sense of frustration.

We all like pictures and attached is J8 showing the axle angle with a T44 and FE. They all have something more then perfect.

I'm going to make what I have work.

Thanks for asking John. All my extended family is doing well, all dry. So much better than many in the Houston area. All the cars stayed dry this past week also.

Car is back home and looking great. It's at the final ride height and I'm glad I installed the power lift kit, damn it's low!

Interesting thing happened on the way home. I turned in to my neighborhood and it stopped running. The way it sounded it was like turning off the key. I thought I flooded it trying to get it started so decided to wait it out. It just happened to have the sunset. fountain and my house in the far background. So I made the best of it by taking some pictures. One of the little boys in the neighborhood would always ride his bike over to the house while I was building the car and always ask if he could take some pictures when it was completed. He is driving a car now and just happened to drive by while I was waiting for sunset light. He ran home and got his camera and he's not bad taking pictures. Much better than those fussy iphone pics. He gives me his card so I can email him for the pics. Alex Bouckley, Creative Media Specialist, McLaren Houston. The kid will going places.

The reason the car stopped running was a fuse which powers the coil and fuel pump relay. Fuse looked perfect in the car but was only passing 0.48 volts? Took it out and tested with a ohm meter and it had a high resistance. Replaced fuse and the car runs and I drive it home. I'm checking all my fuses. Very strange!

Enjoy the pictures I'm enjoying the car.

Update, Took the car to 9th Annual Shelby car Show held in Plano, Tx. June 9th and had a great time meeting the Shelby family. S.C.A.T. members are very friendly and fun to be around.

I have attached some photos of the car show. Arron Shelby, Carrol Shelby's grandson really liked the GT and we took pictures in fromt of my car and his car. Very cool!

Planning on being at Coffee and Cars in Houston on the 7th. It was hard to build but lots of fun to drive and show it.

Enjoy,
