SouthernGT No6

That really does look great Nick.
I've already downloaded your photos for future reference.
Thanks for laying it out so neatly!

I take that back.
Isn't there a pipe missing in that first shot?

Good spot Bob very impressive, but you need to get out more :) fitted the first one before remembering Mary is away until Friday so I didn't have to rush to get them out the front room and therefore had time to take a photo.

A before photo with all 8

Nick what tyres and size you running m8 ..

John..

Hi John,

The car came to me 3rd hand although not much had been done to it it came with brake discs that unfortunately only 17inch wheels would fit.

The wheels and tyres came from IMAGE via Southern GT 275/40 at the back 225/45 front.

Well a couple of weeks ago, I got overly excited about receiving my V5 form, until I noticed on the front page Note 2 (picture 1)

2 SVA/IVA cert issued 13 06 2017 emission limit %CO 0.3n 0.2 FI HC 0.02FI; LAMBDA 0.97 - 1.03.

Looked up the figures and they seemed to pertain to a post 2012 car with cats fitted, so my car would never meet the values if required.

Emailed the DVLA and they said it was because AOH had been put in one of the fields on the IVA certificate A was amateur build O I cant remember what that was but H was emissions catagory.

They phoned me to say as they were not technical my evidence that I had a 1971 engine meant nothing to them, and I would need to speak to VOSA who do the IVA tests and get them to issue another IVA certificate so it could be changed.

Rang the DVLA helpline and a very helpful lady gave me the email address to send my information to. Sent them everything including my engine date certificate, and was emailed details of my case worker.

In the meantime my IVA tester had returned from holiday and read my email so phoned to say there would not be a problem at MOT time and they should only do a visual test. problem is that may be OK at present but I did not want any possible arguments in the future so needed it off the V5.

My case worker emailed me back to say I was correct and he would get it off the V5, eureka, he also noticed a small error on the chassis number as they had it starting SGF on the V5 instead of SGT so he said he would get that changed.

Today my new V5 arrived with all amendments completed, (picture 2)

Have to say DVLA and VOSA have been really helpful and efficient in dealing with emails etc. It was human error that caused the initial problem and with anything involving humans mistakes can be made, I think i made one once. All is well that ends well and I am now a happy bunny. :)

At least I will be if I can get the car to run properly :( so I can actually go for a maiden drive, so near and yet so far cest la vie.

Trailered the car up to the magician that is Kenny Coleman at Engine Data Analysis today. Within 3 minutes Kenny had noticed the coil I had fitted which I think came with my MSD box was not compatible with my Unilite distributer. Changed the coil and the car ran infinitely better. Then Dennis the dyno guy spent a couple of hours re-tuning the carbs and checking the timing to get it back to the same point as when they dynoed it a couple of years ago.

I knew it had to be something in EDA's set up, that I didn't have on my set up in the car. In my opinion the coil was the faulty item causing the backfire, when I had it on a rolling road I believe they tried to dial this out by adjusting the timing to excessive retardation and adjusting the mixture because they thought the backfire was due to my incorrect setting of the valve lash.

Thanks to Kenny Ben and Dennis at EDA, can't recommend them enough, all is back to normal engine wise well chuffed. :)

So after almost 2 months of being taxed and road legal, I finally felt the time had come yesterday for a test drive up the close. All was not well, large amount of juddering on take off so had to slip the clutch to stop this. Arranged for our son to come over today to venture further afield than 100 yards up the road and back.

Didn't get much sleep due to worrying about what could be causing the juddering, worried it was my untested gearbox or the fact I had just plonked the gearbox and clutch together without checking anything and had read somewhere you should use a dial gauge and offset dowels to negate any possible run-out issues.

Well today with our son safely ensconced in Chugaboom my ever faithful Volvo V70 rescue tow car, off we set round the block then gaining more confidence up the road and back around 4 miles in total.

Looks like the the juddering was my selecting 3rd instead of first, need to speak to Mick at Southern GT about setting up the linkage properly.

After arriving home feeling somewhat elated I mentioned to our son that it felt really quick. You can always rely on your offspring to bring you back to earth, "you were only doing 40 dad, probably felt you were going fast as you are so close to the ground".

In my defense I must point out 40 is the maximum speed limit on the local roads.

A picture to celebrate :)

Well done Nick, now tomorrow do the same again but try changing from first to second :poke::poke:
Hey I remember doing just as you are doing, luckily always made it back home under its own steam.

Each time it will get better.

Hi Nick,
In your defence, I had the same issue with mine, spending the first test runs starting off in third and slipping the clutch, until I realised what the issue was.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

Well done Nick. Starting in 3rd, been there done that, I don't feel alone now, seems that there is a club :)

Well it has been a couple of months of not feeling I have achieved anything, one step forward 3 back. Seem to have sorted out my gear selection issues, initially I could only get 1st or 3rd or 2nd and 4th as it was “popping out” of the other gears.

Finally after thinking about it and trying to observe the gear selector mechanism on the back of the box while selecting gear, I noticed the selector when requiring to go all the way in was being pushed back slightly upon release of the gear stick. I seem to have fixed this by the addition of a nut in a strategic place.

I now have a couple of other issues to sort out, firstly on starting now the car seems to kick back if it doesn’t fire. I think this is down to the timing being set to a lot of advance, which is required for the webers, so I don’t want to retard it so not sure how to fix that.

Secondly it is now getting very cold when working on the car as I have to push it out of the garage onto the drive to do any work. A fact that was pointed out to me in no uncertain manor, by a couple of passers-by a couple of weeks ago, maybe the snow had something to do with it but it was actually a lot warmer than the previous day. :)
