Help me please with an Electronic Speedo - Smith´s/Classic intruments etc..

Hi there,

Last year I changed both engine and transmission in my road legal GT-40.

I ordered a R21 gearbox with a Quaife ATB LSD from GTO Engineering (Kevin Jones.

When I got it, I discovered that I couldn´t fit my existing cable to my existing manual Smith´s speedo.....there was nowhere to fit it...!

Now I´m looking for an electronical speedo with km/h range (it also must reach at least 300-320!)

Please give me som idea´s if you have experienced anyone who can support me with these things. I have also heard that I need a proximity sensor.....

Regards,

Christoffer Lundgren

Hi Christoffer,

I have fitted a Stewart Warner electronic speedometer (80mm dia) which has a 280Km/hr range(180mph). I'm pretty sure they manufacture a 100mm dia gauge but I don't Know what the range is.
They are triggerd by a Perception Sensor (Brass/magnetic) which I have fitted to one of the gearbox mounting rails & aligned to the offside (R/H drive) Renault 21T gearbox drive shaft flange. You will also need a plug in Electronic Unit to calibrate the Speedometer once fitted to the car.
All these items are available from MERLIN MOTORSPORT:- +44 (0) 1249 782161

E-mail:- sales@merlinmotorsport.co.uk Web site:-merlin motorsport

You could also try Europa Specialist Spares.

Good luck, regards Paul.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your concern...i really appriciate that. Now I have got more information about how to calibrate and fit the sensor to match the gearbox.

But because that I´m today using the old Smith´s (classical range instruments) I would like to find an electronic speedo
300 or 300 + km/h without a digital trip display - but I can´t find anyone who can supply this .....strange?

So, if somenone knows where I can find one I would be very pleased.

Thank you

Christoffer

The SW gauge I mention has a 'tumbler' type trip display.

Hi Christoffer, I have read your mail and I am puzzled as to why you cannot fit the cable into your R21T gearbox. Did they not fit a Speedo ring on the ATB unit? They should have used the speedo drive ring off the original diff set up on the R21t and you should still be able to drive the cable for the smiths. If there is no cable port at all it is not a R21T gearbox!

If there was no drive ring fitted, then You will need an electronic speedo for sure. We stock them in MPH and Kmh. If you go to my site www.gt40uk.com you can mail me from there. Have another look at the speedo port on the gearbox. Mail me with a photo of the gearbox and I will identify it for you.

Best regards
