17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

Hi
As this is my first post on here, can anyone tell me if there is any manufacturer that makes replica BRM wheel in the size of 17" pin drive that would fit on a Kirkham427 cobra eg. 7/8"x17 fronts and 9.5/10"x17 rears.
thanks
Adrian

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

Get in touch with Phil Schmidt at PS Engineering - Torrance, CA I think- and give him the details. I know he is making 17" BRM type for the GTD's.

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

I also have been working with Phil since April and these wheels should be in my hands "by the end of the year" They are 8x17 fronts and 91/2X17 rear. I believe he also has 11" wide rims to put on these same hubs for the rear. You would have the ask him about them.

I am going to put 225's on the front and 285's on the rear.

Hello Adrian, Sorry for the delay in responding. I was in Maine skiing for the weekend. As for the wheel sizes available from P-S, they offer many different sizes. Cal Phil at 310-534-4477. He will work with you. Good Luck

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

I called Phil yesterday 12/09/03 for a update. The delivery time has slipped a couple of weeks into Jan. 04. He said that he had the first center casting back from the foundry, this is the big step, and banged on it with a hammer so I could hear it over the phone. All that is left to do is setup a schedule with the foundry, get the centers done and delievered back to him, put on the rims, powercoat and ship them to me.

I will post photos, cost information, etc when I have them in hand. That shold be sometime in late Jan. I would expect.

By the way Denis, my middle name is Denis also. It's not very offen that I see my name spelled correctly.

Will these rims have the extra thick edge on them ????(without the 15" centre being built up and used)
I'm looking into having them made @ the moment.

Have you considered Jongbloed??

www.jongbloedwheels.com

He made me some awesome BRM 16". Magnesium centres.

Bill Jongbloed is still making the rims and putting them together. Tom McGlynn is the front man. They look original.

Regards,

J.P

Denis is the roman god of wine and it's the Italian way to spell it! At least thats what my mom told me.

I can't wait to see these wheels. I went by Phil's shop in april and begged him to make some 17" wheels for me. I have been bugging him all summer and I guess he finally gave in about june. Phil's a good guy but very busy.

Here's a 16 inch Jongbloed.

As recommended by the late Carol Smith.

JP, wheel looks very good, but I'm a bit worried that the spinner seems to be engaging on only two or three threads of the stub axle.

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

Correct. We've made some new hubs with extra thread. The wheels were made very thick to accomodate the huge AP brake calipers.

Wheels look great. How do you go on with an SVA in the uk - this is the only thing putting me off ,as I thought you were'nt allowed spinners these days.

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

This particular set are in fact designed primarily for track use. For SVA it will wear nuts with the correct radius, in fact I will not be using spinners on these at all.

I'm having another set made early next year which will be of a heavier construction just for the road.

I have asked Bill Jongbloed about lightweight wheels on the road. He reckons they'll be absolutely fine as long as I don't drive over any pot holes. Well I guess we all know our local roads so that's an easy one.

Regards,

J.P

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

I'm also running Jongbloeds. 16x9.5" fronts, 17x12" rears.
2500 street miles, no problems. There is a bit of tire sidewall to absorb impacts. Big hits may bend the spun aluminum rims, but they are pretty robust. Mine use an aluminum center casting rather than Jongbloeds magnesium centers. The neat thing about these wheels are that you can have new rim halfs or different diameter/offset rim halfs spun to fit the centers.
Safety wire the spinners because if they are like mine, they will come loose.....in less than 10 miles.

To quote the late Carol Smith "Bill Jongbloed makes some of the best racing wheels in the wordl."

I certainly agree.

Its also very pleasing to know that Bill Jongbloed made wheels for Dan Gurney!

Re: 17\" BRM Pattern pin drive wheels???

Your knock offs should not come loose that easily! Check to be sure that the taper is fully seating into the wheel taper. I have seen some wheels where the spinner bottoms on a shoulder before the tapers are fully seated on each other.
