Another Christmas Story - about speed

Probably about 30 years ago whilst I was working in the Royal Air Force, we had a guest night in the mess and the local constabulary were invited to attend. One of my colleagues had far too much to drink and decided to drive himself home. He was warned by the the local sergeant to take the back forestry road (a really good road for going fast) so he set off in his Triumph Spitfire. Now, Mick had set his rpm counter in this car to read 70 mph when he was in top gear and the rpm needle was vertical (a throw back from twisting all the dials in aeroplanes). He was wending his way home at 70 mph minding his own business when a policeman came(walked) up and tapped on the window and shouted to him to switch the engine off. I went to court with him (as a prisoners friend) and he told me that the car vibrated so much and he must have missed top gear and gently came to a halt and not noticed. The policeman in his evidence said that he was very good, and even indicated left to pullover before he (Mick) realized what had happened. He got his licence pulled for 3 years and a hefty fine.
Have a safe one....
