Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Nice video and looks like a lot of fun! That track a lot of guardrail RIGHT beside the track - be a nasty little bump if you off. I liked that little push from behind, but at least it didn't seem too hard. Car okay?

What was the yellow Porsche car that was in front of you? That fellow was on the gas early and shot off of corners, GT3? Or a dedicated race car of different sort?

Thanks for putting this up, it has actually suggested to me a different category for GT40s - Videos of cars etc. Paul, you've got some of the flying mile etc. Ross has some, others do too. Anything is welcome as long as it is cars - racing, driving, etc. and not advertising.

I will allow them to be hosted here, it is just that they'll have to be FTP'd up to the site. I'll create a password for a video directory, a special login, and we'll get it started!

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

I think that a film library is a great idea, and I'm sure all will enjoy it. Ros, I bet you were smilling the whole way round(except for that missed shift). I would like to make only two small suggestions on your video. If your camera support will allow it, would adding some mounting bar insulation cut down on the vibration. The video was VERY good and great on the way you dampened the vibration, as these cars have a way of vibrating with all that is going on under power. My second suggestion would be to remove your windshield wiper next time. Hope it is not a requirement to have one on???? I really enjoyed the video and I hope others will consider adding a camera mount in their cars for the track events.

Bill

Hey Ross,

Great video & a great race. The sound alone is fantastic! I love the way your car runs thru the gears, the ratios must be perfect!

Thanks for posting!

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Ross,

Great video! Getting the camera any steadier would require one of those zillion dollar, gyroscopic, Steadi-Cam mounts.
Besides, what little vibration there is, gives you a true sense of what's REALLY going on! I'd have edited that missed shift though!

I agree with Bill about the wiper removal. I found myself trying to look over it at the entrance to every corner!

It was neat to see the different body roll characteristics between the cars, the yellow Porsche leaning in the corners, while your car remained flat as a board!

Which brand/model camera were you using?

Keep those videos coming!

Stay safe!

Bill

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

I don't know, under 20meg probably. I'll have to check and see. Obvisouly, this would put us into a whole new realm of bandwidth usage but with advertisers I'm not so worried. I've not accepted any more advertisers but have plently of offers, so as far as funding goes I'm sure we can cover this.

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Ron that bump cracked a wheel centre, yellow Porsche 911 dedicated racecar.Sorry the wiper in the way but mounting camera high enough tricky in a 40.I wouldn't edit out the missed gear, lets keep it real.Camera belongs to a friend not sure of brand or model. It was mounted on an adjustable arm.Yes Julian those gear ratios are pretty close to perfect. Thanks for noticing that. Now for the bad news got written off by an idiot in a westfield clubman on sunday morning

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Damn, sorry to hear that. I got inducted into the "Wrecked Race Car Owner" club last weekend too. Our 260Z got involved in a five car that left three cars totaled and our Z in a back way with completed destroyed rear. Long hours ahead...

Ross, that rear damage looks pretty bad on the suspension. However, you've got a space frame so if there is serious frame damage it'll be somewhat repairable. Our 260 is a unibody and we're afraid the pickup points for the suspension is tweaked and will have the car looking like a banana.

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Hi Ron- Damage not too bad broken upright bent lower control arm and wrecked wheel.Thats 2 wheels and brand new slick tyre as well, not a good weekend on the pocket.I don't envy you with Z repair.I had to fit a new rear 1/4 on mine and it took a long time. You'll probably find you've only wrecked a lower control arm as these get a hiding when wheels are hit.The body on the 40 came out intact mainly tyre marks down the side. The guy in the clubman said "what happened" I could have smacked him but it costs you money with the officials if you do that.

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Hi Tim nice to hear from you. you must be reading my mind.New motor is going in so will come back faster.Have you watched my video yet.The gearbox is going well with that new 5th gear.I am pretty resigned to the fact that if you race you must expect these thing to happen but lets hope not very often.
Regards Ross

What the hell did he mean "what happened?" Sounds like the guy we ran into last week with the five car - in the ambulance he couldn't bring himself to apologize to any of the five drivers he wrecked, all he could say was "I didn't mean to leave the track and come back on sideways". Of course you didn't, nobody ever does. Fortunately we had a group protest and he got a five race suspension which effective cans him from the point race. His (rented) car was totaled as well, so possibly we won't see him again until he builds his own and then races it with much more care when he has sweat equity in it.

You are right on the Z - lower control arm gone, strut bent 45 degrees, hub squashed, new wheel, new tire, and new rear quarter panel and we'll be right. Good luck on getting the 40 back on track soon. I'll pull your video and host it here too if you don't mind, once I find the time to set that forum up with videos.

Re: A Race with Ross at Sandown

Ron - I run the motor to 6500 however peak torque is 5200 to 5700.Hosting the video on this site would be great and means I can get the space back on my website.I like your line "sweat equity" by the way."Cheque book drivers" is another favourite of mine.I'm hoping for 500hp from new motor. This is what the TR8 has (the red one) that passed me in the video. This will take me into the top ten and keep me clear of the 1st lap testosterone laden idiots who claim you from behind on the 1st lap, I hope. Can you put a pic of the z up I'd like to see it sounds bad. good luck on the spot weld drilling.
