SM 450 fuel tank cap

Hi all,

just a question, for those who know... I've noticed on few original GT40s I had access to, that specific fuel tank cap, with a cast support base, wearing "SM 450" on it.
I've also seen these exact fuel caps on many old replicas, including my faithful 1986 GTD, pictured below. But, it seems that they are no more available these days.
This makes me think that there must have been a source for these caps, now dried up, as they were probably not something specific to the 40s ?

Do you know guys from where these units could had come ?

We manufacture all of our fuel caps in house.

The caps were not originally from another vehicle.

The SM cast into the base stands for Sterling Metals who have long since gone out of business.

Thanks Andy, I just wanted to get that info, for the sake of curiosity ! (My two fuel caps are ok, still...)
