GTD chassis numbers

In 1989 the chassis numbers began at 13989 and it was a good year for production as they got up to 19889. If you look at 044 then the 44th chassis was built in 1986 which makes the chassis number 4486. Then again GTD40 as a prefix was never used until 1991 and the first was GTD4026991 ie after 268 chassis made. The 44th chassis was put into stock and the buyer is unknown as is whether it was a kit or a completed car.

Up till 1990 no GTD chassis number had GTD in it. Thereafter the chassis number had GTD40 in front of the chassis number. After 1994 the Poole area dialing code of 01202 and some zeros were added to pack it out to meet legal requirements. So my chassis number being the 254th car made in 1990 is 25490, then you had say GTD4027091 and then GTD40012020037099. After that then you get into licensed territory with it going GTD4RW or RS at the beginning instead of GTD400, dependent on who made what and when. But there are not many of those chassis numbers!

e.g.If VIN on the frame is GTD40 01202 00370 99
The code is quite simple.
The first 2 characters - '40' are obvious.
The next 5 - '01202' - is the area code for Poole, where the GTD factory was.
The last 2 - '99' is the year of manufacture.
The remaining characters - '00370' is the serial number.

Nothing pre 1985 although I suspect Ray had started GTD work before. 1985 had 10 chassis listed. 1986 had nearly 40 chassis numbers listed. And they went on from there

Last GTD. Believe it was GTD40012020037099 and this one went to Brian McCarthy.

Thanks Mike,
Interesting. I'm under the impression my chassis was an early one, poss 1985 maybe even 1984 (were GTD going then?)
I know my chassis has an almost identical format to a GTD I used to own in 2005 and that was based on the chassis number supplied by GTD IN 1988

My current GTD is. GAGFTU*****
My old GTD was. GAGFPR*****
