Mallock RML GT40 - A short history

Thanks to Chris Melia's great photos posted on 11 February, more of you will now appreciate the quality and skill levels that went into the making of the RML GT40. Back in 1990 Ray Mallock Ltd (RML) had been contracted to design and build a new Group C car for Aston Martin. Unfortunately for him AML were taken over by Ford along with Jaguar who had separately been developing the XJ220 and Ford decided to focus efforts on the Jaguar project so Ray was left with no project and a team of highly skilled designers and manufacturing staff. Peter Thorpe of Safir Engineering had just completed his last Mk5 GT40 and had not used up his order allocation with ZF of 5DS5/25 transaxles so this gave RML the impetus to design and build their own version and the RML GT40 was born.
This came about during 1990 just as the recession was at its worst and resulted in only 5 cars being built. Chassis 01 was originally a road car but was soon converted to a racecar, 02 was Rays own demonstrator, 03 is a road car, 04 a racecar and 05 is my own road/trackday car.
Chassis 02 has recently been sold and is now undergoing a total rebuild. Chassis 04 has been brought out from several years of hibanation and will be back on the track this season. Chassis 05 will see the light of day for the first time this spring.
Incidently, chassis 01 and as raced by Ray Mallock is now up for sale. See www.rmlmallock.co.uk for contact details.
