GT40 serial numbers

Please give me an example of a completer serial number for an original GT40 I know that they are at least 4 digits (ex: 10XX) but what ater the numbers/letters that are before and after this chassis number?

Re: GT40 serial numbers

Hi Chip
The first cars (prototypes)were GT/101 to 112 then they changed to GT40 P/1000 to 1114. After that it gets complicated with Alan Mann cars (AM), J cars, Mk 4's etc. etc.

Hope this helps

Brian.

Re: GT40 serial numbers

Chip, I am not sure if this is accurate with respect to your question, but from the GT40 production history:

Prototypes:
GT40/101 - 112

Production cars:
GT40P/1000 - 1084

Road Cars:
GT40M3/1101 - 1107

Gulf-JW Mirages:
M10001 - M10003

Alan Mann Cars:
AMGT-1 - 5
AMGT-1009 (replacement for GT40P/1009)

Re: GT40 serial numbers

The vin # for my MK-IV is simply J6. When I registered it in NY that number worked.

So a production car's chaasis number/vin would be, for example: GT40P/1000? cb

Re: GT40 serial numbers

This list should help in this regard.
I found this list on the internet and copied it some time ago. I haven't found the site since.

GT40 P 1034 GT40 Chassis #1034 - First owner James Fielding of Gloucester took delivery of this car, Chassis number 1034 in March 1966. The pine green car left the factory with black trim and as the Ford Advanced Vehicles Production Car Record Sheet records, a heated windscreen, reversing lights, wing mirrors, an electric clock and two fuel gauges. It was retained by Mr Fielding, chairman of the company that produced dynamometers used in the GT40 test programme, for five years.
Finally Fielding sold the car to Paul Weldon. Weldon owned the car for three years, often using it on the road as Fielding had. During 1973 he also entered and won a concourse event at Brands Hatch, demonstrated the car in the pre-race parade at Le Mans and used it in the GT40 team in the 6 hour relay race at Silverstone, demonstrating what a versatile car the GT40 was.Mid 1974 saw Weldon acquire the Mirage M10001 from Anthony Hutton, giving 1034 in part exchange. Shortly afterwards George Parlby an Australian visiting the UK saw and bought 1034 shipping it to Australia on his return home. Parlby raced the car regularly in Australian events until 1982, when he retired it from the track. The car was spruced up and re-sprayed in the familiar JWA / Gulf colour scheme of Light Blue and Marigold. It reappeared for the inaugural Australian G.P. meeting in 1985 having its engine stripped and rebuilt for the occasion.1034 was featured on the cover of Sports and Classic Cars in 1988 before being passed to an American collector, one Harley Cluxton and then to the billionaire Sam Walton, where it shared a garage with the dual Le Mans winning Gulf GT40 (Chassis #1075). The car then went through the hands of noted GT40 devotee George Stauffer to German born Peter Rossler who purchased the car in 1995. Although in excellent condition, in true German style the car underwent further restoration, preparing it to original race specifications. 1034 became a prominent entrant at historic meetings around Europe in the famous GTM series, winning last time out at the prestigious Grand Prix of Stuttgart meeting held at the famous Hockenheim Circuit. In July’99, historic touring car enthusiast David Bowden acquired 1034 at the Silverstone historic race weekend in England. Since returning to Australian soil in August ‘99, 1034 has been at many different events including the Leyburn Historic Sprints, Noosa Beach Concourse (winning best competition car) and the Queensland All Ford Day (winning 3 awards including car of the show). It was also a feature car at the Ipswich 500 V8 Supercar race in October ‘99 where driver Kevin Bartlett turned in (on road tyres) laps of 1 minute 19 - only seconds off the V8 Supercars race times. Not bad for an old car and an even older driver! In November ’99 the car was invited to compete in the ‘Adelaide Classic Rally’ where it proceeded to give both driver, Kevin Bartlett and navigator, David Bowden many thrills. It was entered in the International Supersports Cup race at the 2000 Melbourne Grand Prix. Once again Kevin Bartlett drove the GT40 to its limit! The highlight of the race was beating the 7 litre Mark IV GT40 owned by American Tom Malloy. The car was caught up in a race start mêlée where up to five cars were seriously damaged, only Kevin’s skill and perception saved the GT40 from the same fate.
This car has been on numerous TV segments as well as being a ‘feature car’ in the Australian Classic Car magazine.

Re: GT40 serial numbers

Hershal,

Thanks for that list, it certainly doesn't leave much out!

It also reminds me of a great little story I'd love to share. About four years ago, a friend of mine who owned a barber shop in a little town outside Philadelphia told me that one of his customers was an older man that would drive a real GT40 to get his hair cut. "Yeah, right!" was my reaction. My friend said that it was for real, and that this guy had a garage full of old race cars.

Too good to be true, my curiosity got the best of me. My friend told me that this guy welcomed visitors to his garage, so we headed out to see what this was all about.

We knocked on the door, and a teenage boy answered. My friend said, "We heard that the owner here has a bunch of old cars, and we wondered if we could take a look." The boy replied, "Yeah, that's my grandfather, let me get him." A moment later, and a small, white-haired gentleman came out, and said, "Hi, I'm Bill Wonder." I instantly knew that Chassis 103 was near! He walked us past a few other 1960's racecars and a trailer, and there it was; 103, dark maroon, with a patina as if it had come right off the track 40 years ago!!! Behind it was a row of spare engines and transaxles. Ahhh, GT40 heaven!

I know that Chassis 101 was destroyed, and I think I read that 102 is also gone forever. Is Bill Wonder's 103 the oldest GT40 in existense? If so, any idea what it's worth (including race history and spares?) Max.

Re: GT40 serial numbers

Max,
What a great story ! I luv to hear those kind of stories. I wish it would happen to me someday. It is especially nice when the person such as Mr Wonder shares his stories and collection with other entusiasts.

Thanks Clayton, I have it book marked now.

Re: GT40 serial numbers

Hershal,

Yes, it was a great experience, but I must tell you...

When I told Mr. Wonder that I was a GT40 freak, and was interetsed in building a replica, his reply was, "There are real GT40's, and the rest are just silicone."
Pretentious? Slightly, but if I owned a real one (particularly one that I had raced in the 60's), I'd be the same way! Regardless, he was a very nice person. Max.

Re: GT40 serial numbers

William Wonder's GT40 has a number of distinctions, and it is interesting that it does not seem to get much attention for them; it probably deserves more...
It has been owned continuously by Mr Wonder since purchase from the Shelby Team in the late 1960s.
It was the first GT40 to win a race- Daytona, I think with Miles and Hulme (?) as drivers.
It began life with a Colotti transaxle and may have had a 256 Cu in engine to begin with, although I am not sure about that.
It reportedly has its original blue interior, evidently these are rare.
IMHO, the owner deserves thanks from all for keeping the car as it has been over the years, not parting with it (there must have been temptations aplenty) and as I understand it continuing to race it in vintage events- ie, using it for its original purpose. Good for him!

Also see the bottom of this page:-
David Hoskings Spec Page

Not as detailed, but gives some info as to where some are (or who owns them) now. Unfortunately, some are clearly out of date (just from knowledge from this forum & other sites).

Re: GT40 serial numbers

I was recently doing some research on GT40s and MaLarens and I ran across this old thread on your web site. I know GT40-103 intimately as I was the 16 year old who's job it was to polish the wheels and fetch coffee for Bill Wonder back in 1966. I was one of the local kids who used to hang out at his garage and do anything possible to help out so we could stick around. You see, if you didn't work you didn't stay! Bill's garage was in Glen Cove, LI and every time I drive by it (it's a Piano store now) it brings back all those memories.

My love for sports cars, and apparently polishing wheels, eventually led me into the business I am in today, manufacturing detailing products here in NY.

I must have done something right because I stayed with Bill as a pit crew member into the 1970s and went to many races with the GT40. My Dad and Bill at one point were co-owners of a McLaren M8C CanAm car which we raced for a few years.

When Bill retired from American Airlines he moved to PA and I completely lost track of him until I ran into him at a car show here on LI last summer, that's Bill seated in the picture below. I recently discovered that he sold #103 and it eventually sold on the auction block for over $2 million!
