zf leaking

I noticed recently on a 200 mile trip that my ZF was pushing fluid out of the vent hole. I filled the tranny with fluid up to the fill hole on the passenger side of the case. Do you think that is too much fluid or did the fluid simply expand when it got hot? It would seem that a heat shield under the exaust or on top of the case might be prudent since it gets so hot there. Any thoughts?

Do you know how much oil you actually put in? If not I would drain it into a measure to find out.I'll check my records for the amount I fill mine with if you like.

I fill the trans to the filler plug you noticed and never had a problem with oil coming out the vent. The exhaust is running over the trans without a heat shield.Last year I made a 1000 mile trip to Le mans and back and the only leak I had was the rh output shaft.I replaced the oil seal but it keeps seeping oil between the shaft and oil seal.Emiel

Re: zf leaking

I was told by Olthoff that the oil will percolate out the vent hole until the level reaches it's sweet spot.
