DRB Chassis #7

Well here's another DRB on the road. Finally registered in South Australia. I think the first one here.
Registered here with standard 5.0L HO 1989 Mustang motor and EEC-IV.
Its taken me a while but finally the project is finished.
You can see in the attached pics that its sitting a little high - this was to keep the minimum 100mm ground clearance, so i pushed it up to about 110mm just to make sure.

Hi Chris
Good to see you got it finished. Hopefully mine will get to that stage one day. It looks fantastic in its new paint and will inspire me to get out in the shed and work on mine. Great job. Hope to catch up with you soon.

Re: DRB Chassis #7

Hi Chris,

Congratulations !! The car looks superb & I love the colour (no bias here !!). Did you end up using that old stock Mustang induction setup for rego ? Any plans to "work" the motor now that you have got rego ?

Now comes the hard part - what to do with your spare time - finish off all those minor outstanding items, or just go for a drive ! 4 years after my rego, I still haven't got around to a professional carpet job, headlining, decent handbrake, etc !!

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Re: DRB Chassis #7

Hi Guy's,

Thanks for the compliments. I am stoked its finally finished.
To answer some of your questions. The wheels are Simmons, F90 - and I matched the silver stripes over the body to the centre colour of the wheels. A small touch but makes a difference. The colour is from the Nissan 350Z. Simmons have the specs required for the DRB setup. ie required offsets etc.

Peter: yes i did use the manifold you sent me - worked a treat - no questions. Just painted it nice and black to hide anything which may have attracted attention. Well now the manifold comes off and the 8-stack goes on. I have got the Autronic ECU, and thats going on next. What setup did you use on the ignition side? I have an auto elec mate who is putting this together for me now so would be good to know what setup you have? Individual coils? Did you need to put in any additional sensors - ie crank position sensor?

Now i have driven it - i would like to improve the brakes - cant seem to get the f/r bias correct, so may have to go to the tilton setup with balance bar. Need to get the electronics and that sorted first then i can take it out on the track to test it comprehensively.

As for other minor outstanding items, the car needs to be pretty much complete here in South Aust, so i have got basically everything done from interior to hand brake. The only minor thing outstanding is gassing the A/C. I have a leak somewhere and cant find it, so I forsee will be multiple hours sourcing that!

Re: DRB Chassis #7

Hi Chris,

We had to cut down the dizzy & go with coil-packs because the fronts of the fuel rails ended up in the middle of the dizzy cap ! The rails were run up the middle of the stacks (instead of outside as per standard) on advice from a mate who is an emissions expert. His opinion was that we would get a better burn if the injectors pointed straight at the ports, & I guess he was right - to our knowledge, this is the only 8-stack to ever pass the RTA's IM240 emissions test ! Mind you, it makes everything very hard to get at, so if I wasn't worried about emissions, I would not have bothered.

From memory, there were 2 x toothed rings inserted into the dizzy (one for cam & 1 for crank position, I think), & a flat plate/cover was made up to replace the dizzy cap.

We used 4 x dual coil-packs, so it is effectively a "wasted spark" setup (& cheaper than 8 individual coil-packs, etc). Each coil-pack is fired by an "igniter module", which is in turn triggered by the Autronic ECU.

Hope this helps a bit.

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Re: DRB Chassis #7

Thanks Pete - this is good info. I'll pass this onto the my auto elec expert to see what he thinks. My plan atm is to get it going with the Autronic so when i come back to Aust at xmas i can at least drive it around and have some fun.
