Everyone has a different plan of attack...
My plan was to use an Audi 01E. I wanted to use a modern trans with good syncros that was serviceable at a sub $5K USD price.
The stock ratios for most TDi 01E's are either:
3.50
1.89
1.23
.87
.68
.56
or
3.50
1.89
1.23
.93
.73
.60
My plan was to re-gear using the wide ratio unit and replace 1st and 2nd as follows:
1st: 3.1
2nd: 1.92
3rd: 1.23
4th: 0.87
5th: 0.667
6th: 0.561
Using a 3.85 R&P.
With a Wavetrac LSD, this would have been roughly a $4K (USD) transaxle. I feel this would have held up well for the light weight project (~2200 lbs) I was planning.
Based on my research, I was happy to learn that these transaxles have service parts and can be rebuilt at a modest price. Unlike the Porsche units, they do not need to be flipped or otherwise modified and they also have better service parts selection than the Porsche Boxster equivalents. Scott DeWitt on this board was very helpful in my research.
As for the ZFQ, neither Chris Melia on this board nor Quaife responded to my inquiries.
Lastly, after speaking with
delynn@griffingearboxes.com I was pleased to learn that he's moving forward with a product that I think will really fill a gap in this market.
