Steves scratch KVA

Hi all, I thought I would start a thread on my car. I have been working on it for seven years and am finaly seeing the light at the end of the tunel. I bought a KVA body and built most everything else. I did have to replace the rear body section and ended up using a CAV so there were a few modifications necessary to mate the KVA to the CAV. I am using a roller block 302 with an Audi transaxle.

Steve made the chassis himself...

He works for Boeing and is a very accomplished guy......

He is a really good pal of mine and I have enjoyed sharing his trials and tribulations during his build....

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Very, very nice. Question: Why do the originals and some replica chassis have holes in the front upright section behind where the dash attaches?

Re: Steves scratch KVA

The real reason ,as I have been reliably informed ... but argued by many is to allow access for the spotwelder....the reach of the tongs on a spot welder is somewhat limited and the flanged holes provide a certain amount of stiffness but it reduces the length required for the spotwelder tongs.

I am sure that some replica chassis add them for asthetic purposes to recreate the original look and feel,

I decided that a "sealed" chassis would be of greater benefit to our customers that want to drive their cars in any weather.

You just gotta love the GT40.....and drive them as much as you can.

Steve,

Beautiful work - very nice to finally get a peek!

Am looking forward to seeing first hand all that hand-crafting one of these days...

Best,

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Thanks Bill for your comments. As Fran has said I put the holes in for both stiffness and access both during manufacture and after. I built the frame and all the suspension components including the rear uprights. The front spindles are 2.0" drop Mustang II. I have admired your car for months now, you are doing an absolutely FANTISTIC JOB!! Hope mine turns out nearly as well.

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Thanks Tim,
I am looking forward to following your build as well. It is great to have a few people close to share this with and bounce ideas off. When are you going to start your build?

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Steve,

My build will start very shortly - due to a new position at work I've had much less time to spend working on the car than I had anticipated, and the lions share of that time has been spent locating some of those hard to find parts, of which I've been fortunate enough to find a few. 'Plan B' of the assembly should come together in the next week or so... exciting times!

The effort you put into the paint paid off big time - top flight work! I know you're please with the results. Speaking of which, I'd love to see some more shots of your chassis. Anything left in the camera?

Best,

T.

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Steve,

I've noticed a LOT of boeing.com addresses in the new registrations list lately (in the course of doing admin stuff) and it really has me curious if you guys have a GT40s club going up there in the wild and wet? I asked tciampoli about it in a PM, but I see he hasn't been logged on since his initial registration and posts, so he hasn't seen the PM yet.

Regards,
Lynn

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Hi Lynn,
There is not a Boeing GT40's club yet, might be time to start one. I did start a karting club here several years ago when I was racing and it is still going strong as far as I know. If I can get a list of people here that are intrested I will see if there is any intrest in starting one.

We here at Boeing are hard at work building jets...we don't have time to look on the forum and dilly dally around with this stuff. (snicker)

Re: Steves scratch KVA

Hi all, have finally had some time to work on the GT again and thought I would give an update. I have finished all the plumbing and am starting the wireing hoping to get done enough to start it in the next few weeks. The dash is in with all the gages, the oil pressure and water temp are hooked up with the rest to follow soon. Take care,

Steve

Bravo, Steve! Is the proud father passing out cigars by chance?

I can only imagine the feeling when the heart of that beast started to beat. Very much looking forward to seeing
