There was a set on an Audi R8 at the track earlier this year. Would definitely go nicely with this project here. But they are mucho dinero!

| Re: Carbon GT mono Are those ribbs solid carbon fiber or is there some core material in there? If so what do you use as a core?
I assume the wood patterns were not left in as the core. |

| Re: Carbon GT mono Simply beautiful wokmanship!! Absolutely gorgeous !!!
It's still difficult, being of "old school" thought, that carbon fiber can be strong enough for suspensions(yet we all know it is)!! Maybe my feelings are rooted in how the stuff comes to me as raw materials- rolls of cloth and some liquid resin to replace nice, strong(and heavy) steel. Working with composites, to me is almost like getting something from nothing(think of it, the body of your car or suspension came to you in a can and roll of cloth!!)
I know we don't think of the worst during a build, but how repairable is the chassis( in particular the chassis pick-up points) after a shunt? How does carbon and epoxy take to secondary bonds after the initial cure? Would it involve any type of heated post curing? On that note do you have to perform an elevated temp cure to this chassis when it's all finished?? |

| Re: Carbon GT mono Urs, what sort of brakes do you plan to use? The Wilwood calipers I got are very light, but maybe you plan something more exotic? Of course, we haven't seen how well they stop the car, but Superformance use them, and they weigh quite a bit more than your car is going to.
I may have asked this, but do you have an estimated weight for the assembled car, total?

| Re: Carbon GT mono Well i'm pleased to see someone is doing it. i have thought about it, i'm in the FRP. business. heard about someone trying. I wonder if your using prepreg or infusion or both being in europe it's a lot more common and easier to get. i am going to try some as soon as i can get an oven built but in the mean while i am hand laying up my parts using carbon kevlar hybrids and mat. good work, Dave. |

| Re: Carbon GT mono Really interesting reading this thread. Its certainly a very different way to do a CF mono than we would have done in F1, and different to any techniques i've read about. its really nice to see how someone from a different industry tackles something like this.
Haven't totally got my head around how its being done and whether i can fully appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of it yet. But two things impress me, that you actaully bothered to tackle such a project and the apparent speed in which you are getting into it. Some of the techniques, if they work reliably, would be very welcome in the Automotive industry.
We did something similar a few years back on a Porsche 964, and it required a New York financier with 100's of millions of dollars in his bank account to finance it and 3 designers atleast 2 years to do the design work. I believe the programme is still going, including a carbon gearbox and torque convertor. I remember the design costs for the rear swinging arm was £46,000 alone, and the total cost of the tools and parts came to another £75,000 just for those parts.
