Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

Do not leave the sanded primer for many weeks then apply basecoat. Follow the product instructions to the letter. My new painter uses PPG all the time. The first one did not and I paid the price, an expensive price.

Dont let the image below happen to you!

Anyhow the car will look even better this time.

Thanks for the tips Jason...
It must've broken your heart to see that paint peeling like that..

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

Sounds about right Jason.

When I built the build table and painted that I went out to body shop paint supplies at Bayswater. Told them that I wanted "Ford light engine blue". First question they asked was what undercoat I wanted.

This then followed with me explaining what undercoat I had already used (a regular hardware store product) and them being unable to sell me something compatible. Lesson learnt. For the best results you really do need to use the whole box and dice from the one manufacture.

It was evident when I was wiping down the build table prior to paint that the recommended cleaner was dissolving the primer. I can only imagine what sort of reaction would have occurred had I used something incompatible.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the new paint job.
I remember it was already pealing at the Philip Island historic's in early 2016.

good luck

Ryan

Yes it started peeling early. Lucky that the primer was all good, no issues there so I have a solid base to build on. Painting will start this weekend.

Cool, are you getting that guy with the cobra in Moorabbin to do it?
I would love to be there to see the pain get laid on.

He was too busy. I'm getting it done at SL Customs. Recommended through the cars and coffee crowd.

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

I remember my brother teaching me "it's all in the preparation, not the painting". I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. Very unfortunate. You have done a fantastic job on an amazing car

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

Car is in primer (tinted primer). I know its been seen 100 times on other cars but when its your own its exciting, even for a second time!

Now it gets blocked down and its ready for the black underside and accents. After that the basecoat colour.

Exciting times looking forward to seeing the finished product. Are you considering running 15" wheels?

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

Base coat is done with a clear sealing coat. Now to rub it down and prep for the stripes and then the real clear finish. Its looking better than it ever has and its not even finished, the painter is doing a great job.

Car is back from paint and now I just need to put new decals on again. Glad to see the end of that!

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

Just a few more images before decals. Must thank PPG for awesome color matching and great paint as well as the painter SL Customs here in Australia. Absolute attention to detail. The PPG CeramiClear is the best, it looks 100 times better than before.

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

I was just looking through the last couple of pages on your post. I had much the same problem with paint on my Corvette. But I think the problem was mine. Wrong primer & paint combo, this time I'm using all the same company's products (House of Color). Most of the paint came off with a razor blade (didn't stick to the primer).

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

Now that the car is all painted its time to blast it all off again! Starting to move into using the car as it should be. Ever so slowly though

It really is a great car. Simply drive it to the track and home. The car has now done over 10,000 Kms and not missed a beat.

Re: Jason's Coyote Powered RCR40 Downunder

It is a fast track, I have done track days there in my old 911 and found myself going backwards down the track on more than one occasion. I really want to get the car into regularity but life is just too busy at the moment to get into racing again. I know once I start its going to be hard to stop again.

I saw your car there to but don't know what you look like either
