Finally good things come to those who wait....

Picked up my chassis 2 weeks ago. Some work to do including fitting a roll cage inside the rear bulkhead as per Ali's car and am sorting out my storage and work area before cleaning ready for zinc primer.

Haven’t done a great deal apart from discuss a Historic Technical Passport with the UK FIA appointed registrar (including roll cage details and engine block selection). Very helpful guy and will be involving him in all stages of build and parts decisions.

Chassis and car is a Mk 1 and I plan to build it to late Mk 1 spec (Le Mans 1966) to get it in group G1 or should it be group F as defined in Appendix K of FIA rules???

Extract appendix K

3 – DATE CLASSIFICATIONS AND DEFINITION
3.1 A car will be dated by the specification of that car and not necessarily by the date of build.
3.2 Dating periods are as follows:
A) Before 1/1/1905.
B) 1/1/1905 to 31/12/1918.
C) 1/1/1919 to 31/12/1930.
D) 1/1/1931 to 31/12/1946.
E) 1/1/1947 to 31/12/1961 (to 31/12/1960 for single-seat and two-seat racing cars).
F) 1/1/1962 to 31/12/1965 (from 1/1/1961 for single-seat and two-seat racing cars and up to
31/12/1966 for Formula 2), excluding Formula 3 and single engine-make Formulae.
GR) 1/1/1966 (1/1/1964 for Formula 3) to 31/12/1971 for Single-seat and two-seat Racing cars.
G1) 1/1/1966 to 31/12/1969 for homologated Touring and GT.
G2) 1/1/1970 to 31/12/1971 for homologated Touring and GT cars.

Engine will be a 302 Mexican block with a 289 crank and 48 IDA's on top. Fitted with 2 SW pumps. I will fit aluminium tanks with foam as per FIA specs.

Plan to fit a ZF-2 gearbox (when I can afford it), and I have an original rear clip from P1041 (a racing spare) and copy front clip, twin nostril scoop and doors. Roof is two piece pressed steel as original.

Haven’t done a great deal other than time just spent staring at the monocoque……

No photos yet……

I fear this is the first of a good few years of build…..

Still moving stuff around and sorting my build area. Did manage to fettle and etch prime one piece..... and had a look down the line of the sills....

I was told that the 72 block will be OK as long as the engine looks original from the outside, I also believe you can only use pressed rockers.

Am I a tease?

Re: MIRAGE AUTOMOTIVE - Doc Watson's car

A bit of investigation with the rear clip paint.

What was the original glass colour was it white???

Looks like, from bottom to top.....

Glass - Blue - Gulf Blue? (yea right) - Yellow (Beurly?) - white primer - yellow gelcoat - red wash

I wonder if there is a strip under there, rear is a 'racing spare' possibly from P1041....

GT40 P/1041
09/66 : Zolder, 101, Beurlys, 1st -

10/66 : Montlhery, 32, Buerlys/Mairesse, DNF -

04/67 : Zolder, Dauwe, 2nd – Zolder, Dauwe, 2nd -

05/67 : Montlhery, Dauwe, 4th

An unusual initial blue color...any thoughts....

Re: MIRAGE AUTOMOTIVE - Doc Watson's car

After a bad year losing my brother to cancer and now with my father very ill with cancer I am trying to get the build rolling again......

Roof outer has been primed.... also can someone confirm what windscreen this is? Im assuming it is a Gelsco screen and so has the correct curvature. I need to confirm this as the roof and valance will be set from this. Also the screen is triplex and kite marked for IVA.

Regards Andy

Re: MIRAGE AUTOMOTIVE - Doc Watson's car

I have an 80% finished mono chassis with the roof, A pillars, bulkhead and front suspension to attach (I have all the sheet parts and metal inserts).

I have drawings for the position of the roof and bulkhead and also the rear clip bracket.

I'm in the process of setting the rear clip, doors roof and window with all bodywork in place. This will require some specialist tools which I will be aquiring.

At the moment I'm etch priming the chassis and sorting 'the shed' its like building a car in a wardrobe at the moment...... but I'm loving it....... there is also a 289 side slab cobra (very old kit car) under the gt40 playing bunk beds. Space is tight!!!

Re: MIRAGE AUTOMOTIVE - Doc Watson's car

Holy crap 2 years between posts........

Awaiting confirmation that I now own a zf-0 gearbox for the car.... yay!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shed is turning into a work shop, with grinder, mill and very soon a lathe, tig welder and spot welder.

I have the casting for the rack and (IIRC) the internals come from an MGB???, I will be able to machine the casting myself now and heard from Chris Melia many years ago that his machinist stated he was 'Never going to agree to machine one of those f###ing things ever again!'

So things are moving again and at this rate I will take longer than Jim to complete my car.
