Goodbye F5000 hello GT40

well lads I've finally done it, along with a couple of mates we have just purchased a nice set of MK1 40 moulds and a chassis jig, for a very reasonable price, so it looks like the dream may just turn into reality after god knows how many decades of wanting and wishing.
I will build 4 chassis, 1 for me, and 1 each for the others involved and share the cost of pulling some bodies out of the moulds between us
power will be LS1 gen 4 6ltr with an 016 trans which I just happen to have saved for a rainy day, and it looks like this is that day.
let the games commence.
cheers John

Woohoo! If they are anything like your F5000 they will be something special!
Keep us all updated with build pics etc.

Tim.

I would have considered the F5000 as meeting a dream. Continue forward and can't wait to watch the build. So, based on the completion time of the F5000, I guess you'll get the first one out the door in about 2 weeks? :)

Hi Troy no mate, its coming from Melbourne, there has been 2 cars built and registered with the set so far, and he has 1 chassis and 1 body that he's saving for a rainy day, its a MK1 body which I just happen to like a lot, bonus

Come on Terry be fair at least give me till the end of the month,:wiseguy:

cheers John

ps, anybody have any bits they don't want let me know.

Ok. It's just that I know of a set of moulds in WA that were for sale, very cheap.

The guy in Melbourne (was it Venom? can't recall) that was looking to make GT40s 'borrowed heavily' from the old Roaring Forties chassis. If it's that chassis, I believe the old RF suspension may have been a pretty close fit.

Come on guys , no pressure geeze, hopefully it will loosely resemble a 40, but I will apologise in advance, its getting a chev in its tail.

cheers John

Hi John

Looking forward to watching you progress (how about a video as well).
Good choice of engine, here in NSW we have to use a current emission compliant engines and the only engine that fits without cutting up the beautiful GT40 body is the LS Chev a pushrod V8 and as a bonus--- all alloy.
The only disadvantage so far is the negative remarks from some over the top Ford fanatics.

Hi Dazz, that's one of the main reasons why I chose the LS1, bang for buck its the cheapest, lightest and most reliable hp you can buy, and it passes current Emission ADR's which we both know are a pain in the RS.
so really its a no brainer.
I will start a build diary as soon as the jig arrives and I get some steel, should be fun.

cheers John

Guys, despite not exactly fitting the performance aspect, it seems guys are still getting registered their cobra reps with an AU ser2 5 litre as it passes the IM240 test.

I'm led to believe it's too expensive to tool up for Euro IV V whatever it is this week so the old IM240 test has to suffice for quite a while to come.

Just mentioning as the 5L can be fairly cheaply pushed to the 016 limit, sound better, $1K purchase cost for everything needed (aside from factoring in a future 'built' version) and be a ford. Just food for thought

Cheers, Matt

G'day gents,

My name is Treeve and I'm one of the blokes in with John on this little GT40 journey. I'd like to clarify the NSW engine situation is nothing at all like this. You can use any engine you like in an ICV as long as it passes the IM240 test. I should know this - I'm a VSCCS certifier specialising in ICVs. I've certified over a dozen in the past 12 months, including a number of RF GT40s, so I've jumped through the hoops enough times to know how it all works. I'm going for a 302W in mine and I'm looking at a 6 speed Subaru box.

I'm happy to answer compliance questions for people and hopefully we as a group can put some good cars together.

Well lads there has been a little progress, a couple of bodies are very soon to be pulled from the moulds of which 1 will be yours truelies and then it looks like an epic road trip to way down south to pick up the bodies and the jig,
but in the mean time ive been accumulating bits and bobs, and so far have
1 very nice pair of Ultima alloy rear uprites and hubs
2 15 x 12 wheels for the rear, and 2 15 x 8 for the front
and just happen to be jonny on the spot today and got 2 new 295-50-15 rear tyres for $300 ea, gotta be happy with that
also found a pair of 250 fezza rear tail lights in good knick.
plus a few little incidentals.
so hopefully in he next few weeks I might be able to start gluing bits together

cheers John

Well I know ive been a bit slack lately, but mobility was getting to be a bigger and bigger handicap, so I went under the knife last wed for a knee replacement, and when they said it might hurt a bit, they weren't holding anything back that's for sure. it still hurts like hell, but I can get around on it albeit limited.
still no progress on the bodies as where getting rotisseries made up for the front and rear clips, so hopefully parts wont be to far away and ill be well enough for the big road trip to collect them
will keep you posted
cheers John

John, if only it was like building cars, just un bolt one bit and upgrade to the next. When you get to our classic age, maintenance seems to be more complicated, yes I too am no so mobile for a few days, just had a belly button hernia fixed.....mum did say if i played with it to much it would unravel!
I had the chassis on the rotisserie last week catching up any welds underneath, once all that was done, it was back on the trolley. I put the motor and trans back in and will now start on the exhausts. Basically all the chassis work is done now and its just bolt on stuff. Hopefully i will be allowed out to play tomorrow.
Speedy recovery.
Russell
