1086 for sale on Ebay

As of 2 February, the bid is $200,000 with reserve not met. It'll be interesting to see what it sells for, if it sells. Looks like a pretty nice specimen. Click here for the Ebay auction

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

Pretty nice car !! But really original ?
Kevlar body made by FAV ?? I don't remember that ... Where are the fuel tank door trappe inside ?? The paint looks very well for a 33 years car old never restored...
Wouldn't it be a Brian Pepper car who built kevlar body car in the past ?
Malcom gets also a pic of his car near a 917 and even a Mc Laren F1 and his car is a GTD ... (Hi Malcom !) I wonder if this sale is not a joke ... if not, 200 000 $ is very cheap for such a car ... give your advice

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

IMHO there are real cars with major history, real cars with minor history, and real cars.
EVERYTHING else is simply what it is and anyone buying anything else is kidding himself if he thinks it is worth what this person is asking for "1086".

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

Bid is $200,000 and reserve not met yet.

A lot of people mix up Carbon fibre with kevlar, and carbon fibre was very new on the market and almost secretative !!!
That is what the Gulf cars got as reinforcement on their body work, wich were otherwise very “light weight” !
Don´t know the facts for 1086...
Say´s that is have been recently “freshened up” !!
More or less to Gulf spec.
With a few ad ons as well.
Boss´s were never used at the time.
Otherwise looks to have very right pieces in general....

This is a proper car altough completed at a very late date.
No racing history or such, but it is a healthy one as said.
Chassis is a production run but the “car” is a post production assembly.or how you want to fraze it.
No fascinating history, but it is history it self.
As with a lot of others...
Fascinating or not, renovated or not, crashed or not etc...etc...
They are it!, no matter how you twist it.

”GT40 P1086 was not actually numbered at the time of its construction.
It had apparently reached the stage of being a rolling chassis when production ceased and it sat around until John Willment decided to buy it himself in 1971.
Hence there is no construction sheet for this car.
Willment owned the rights to the JWA name and gave the car the next chassis number in sequence from the end of the production run.
No serious attempt was made to build the car up until the late 1970s, and it was eventually completed in Brian Angliss “CP Autocraft” workshops in 1984.
It was finished to a very high standard and was in Gulf livery”

So then it is a FAV/Abbey tub built up as a JWA car, as the other late ones..
JWA “made” the last cars and entered them...
They took over the business after Ford withdrawn...
About the same people.places and parts....

It has had about 5 to 6 owners or so...
It was included in the panorama shots at the Glen etc..
Featured in magazines and won some exhibition contest somewere...

Sold at Duncan Hamilton & Co.Ltd.,UK in -84 something.

Advertised more recently as:
1966 Ford GT40 Mk I
S/N GT40 P1086, production racing coupe, built to full wide hip, tail rear clip Gulf specs by Willment in 70s, fully restored Gulf Racing Blue/Orange, Black interior, Full race BOSS 302 engine, , late model BRM wheels, this car is built on the last chassis from FAV (Ford Advance Vehicles), 1 of 48 race coupes built, previously owned by John Willment (co-owner of J.W. Automotive in England, the original maker of the GT40), no race history.
Stock Number: xxxxx
Mileage: 600 miles
Price: $ xxx,xxx

Why not eh? One can ASK can't they

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

Nice looking car- wasn't this one of the ones finished by Brian Angliss, maybe I have got it confused with another one...
As far as its' identity as GT40P1086..well, it is described as such in Ronnie Spain's book, and seems fairly represented on the auction site. I believe there are a few cars which are numbered after this which may have been completed by Brian Wingfield.
I don't think which engine it has matters much. As these were race cars, engines were considered to be interchangeable items which were frequently taken out, rebuilt, replaced, etc. This car has an original Boss 302 block which is interesting but neither adds to nor detracts from its' value if you ask me.
If you look at this as a low-mileage late GT40 without race history, its price in the 200K range looks pretty good- especially since a sixties' Mark I just changed hands at Barrett-Jackson for, what was it? over 400K. This would leave you enough for many fillups with Cam2 or the fuel of your choice...
Of course, some of the Mark V cars have been sold for more reasonable prices, and they are better screwed together and nicer than the Mark Is.

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

Yep, Angliss and quote from Spain´s book.
Like i wrote..
1087,88 and 89 were completed by Wingfield etc..recently..but on Tennant chassis.

Serial numbers were changed and sometimes also displacement.
Engines sometimes.
But they had to stick to what was homologated.
So the difference to a race car is not as much that some people tend to believe.
They were of course set up differently and used sometimes different detailing wich should not effect performance in an "un legal" way !!!
Should, being the key word !!!

Some MkV´s have been sold for high prices too..
MkV and I´s do share several things other than basic dimensions.
Same Moulds were used for both.
Altough MkV uses different lights and clips etc..
And a MkV is not a MkI, wich it was moulded after....

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

There are a lot of bids on Ebay which seem to vanish into thin air when it comes time to actually pony up the $$$ and close the deal. We'll see if the car actually gets sold, not just 'sold' on Ebay but actually changes hands. Personally I have my doubts, and I agree it is overpriced. You could buy 1040 for that kind of money and have a car with a race history, albeit one needing extensive restoration and possibly incomplete.

That's what I thought: this is the car that was on display at the SF International Auto Show back in November. It's in pretty nice shape.

Re: 1086 for sale on Ebay

Perhaps it should have been advertised as GT40 MKI P-1086/84 in Gulf Livery.
I photographed it in 1984 at Duncan Hamiltons, Bagshot before it got sold. It was as as new condition. John Horseman as far as I can make out in his book 'Racing in the Rain' states that he regards the GT40's made at FAV Slough, Banbury road as 'originals'. As I did a count from his book the last GT40 was P1084!! Most Wingfield cars have the designation W after their chassis number i.e. P1000W.
Regards Allan

The seller who was advertising it in Hemmings (Brian) is an acquaintance. He bought the car from the estate of a friend of mine, Bo Cheadle. I looked at the car closely when Bo owned it. It's discussed in detail in the various registries; it was built by John Wyer from leftover parts in 1984.

While Bo owned it, famed auto photographer Ron Kimball shot numerous photos of it for calendars etc. Check it out on his website:

http://www.ronkimballstock.com

and search on "GT40"

Note that it was built with a non-standard, non-180 exhaust system. It looks at first glance like a "GT40" exhaust system, but in fact it is two totally independent systems that go up and back, instead of down--sort of like a speedboat.

Anyway. Bo sold the car for $200K to Brian (I think), and Brian was asking $395K when he sold it a year or two later. The car was purchased and then subsequently traded hands three or four times within that year, supposedly with the price ratcheting upwards of a million bucks (rumor?)

I suspect the value of original GT40s has topped out and this car has probably nosed over, and isn't worth what the top-paying buyer paid for it, today.

I'd love to have that car....

I have this car down as sold at auction on Feb 20 2006 ( or maybe 2005) for £275,000 plus VAT @17.5%.
And for some reason I have 1089 in brackets ?
