The Ariel Atom is the purest of sports cars. It doesn’t have carpets, a windscreen, stereo, doors, roof, heater or a body shell. But, it has plenty of air conditioning (which you control with the throttle pedal). This third-generation Atom is even more refined than the original Atom. It has the two-litre Honda i-VTEC engine with twin balancing shafts and improved engine mounts making for a smoother ride. The Atom is perfectly balanced, and because you can see what the wheels are doing on the road, it’s a breeze to perfectly clip every apex on the track.

The Atom is extremely communicative - like a '73 Porsche 911S, only on steroids. Its cornering prowess is achieved by weighing in at around one-third of a current 911's curb weight. And the suspension is a serious piece of kit – you can see it working as you drive. Double unequal length wishbones, pushrod-operated inboard dampers, adjustable outboard rod ends, lightweight fabricated uprights, and the ability to adjust ride height and toe & camber mean that the Atom can be set up for road or track easily and quickly.

Components come from top companies like Willwood, Bilstein, Eibach, and more. The red brake bias knob is on the dash and is adjustable just like a proper race car. But you won’t be looking at this when you bury the accelerator because vision becomes blurry and full concentration is required on the road. This is a scary fast car – one of the fastest production cars in the world. The Honda’s VTEC engine screams behind your head to north of 8000rpm – and at revs over 3,500 it sounds like a woodchipper chewing up 2x4s. The suede covered steering wheel is a small and formula-style. But, hey, nothing beats a few photos:

For track-day junkies, true motoring enthusiasts, and those who want a pure, iconic, and ultra-rare sports car, there is nothing like the Atom. If there's a car more fun to drive and more attention getting than a GT40 - well, this is it. This one was licensed, registered and tagged in Florida in 2010 and is a one-owner car with less than 9,000 miles. Here are some additional details:

This is the car made famous by Jeremy Clarkson of TopGear fame and his outrageous road/track test. Below is a link which includes a track drive by 'The Stig'. The original low-res version has been viewed over 11 million times and is reputedly the most watched car video of all time. It was filmed over seven-years ago with an early-generation Ariel Atom; incredibly, the Atom 3 is much improved. Compare the stock Atom's dash, wheels, exhaust, and lack of wings to the Pathfinder model.
