GTD40 Car Club Benefits

We may be called the GTD40 Car Club but we work hard to cater for all marques of GT40 replica and to be of interest to those who are lucky enough to own a real Ford GT40 too. In reality you don't actually need to own any of the above to qualify for membership but to just be keen on GT40s.

If you are a member you automatically receive our quarterly magazine, GT40, whether you are here in the UK or overseas. There is no additional premium to pay in your sub because you live overseas.

The magazine is typically 52 pages (A4/Letter) and now is in full colour and professionally printed. If you wish to see a sample, please look up the thread Winter Magazine in this section of the forum for sample pages. Scroll down and there are some extracts from this quarters magazine. We haven't just picked the best pages, that is typical of all the pages!

In the magazine we try to cover technical, social and competitive topics. Virtually all the articles are written by members for members and so relate very closely to ownership of these superb cars. We always welcome new contributors.....

The club has been running now for 12 years or so. In that time we have built up a huge knowledge on GTDs but a lot of that kowledge overflows into other marques as automotive know how is often generic in application. If we haven't written an article on a subject, the committee can put you in touch with someone who should be able to help. The 5 committee members have 24 years of committee'ship experience to draw upon between them.

What else does the club do other than the magazine? Our principle other activity is competition and track day useage of our cars. We don't run a formal championship as other clubs do but we arrange to take part in between 10 to 12 hill climbs and sprints each year and we organise a club track day, traditionally at Goodwood Motor Circuit, the original test track for FAV in the 60s. The circuit remains unchanged in layout although the facilities are much better than they used to be! Some club members have completed in excess of 1000 laps at the circuit, we love it so much. One year we had in excess of 40 GT40s on the starting grid.....

Hill climbing and sprinting is a typically British form of motorsport and is a time trial from A to B, run singly, with hill climbs being up a hill and sprints being mainly on the flat, often on circuits. Of short duration, the action is short but very explosive. Last year we had 16 members take part in some or all of the events and spectators are always welcome, as are new competitors. And if you are a member but don't have any type of GT40 you can still use your membership to enter the same events in any other marque of car you own. We all gather together in the paddock and generally have a ball and if someone has a mechanical problem it is quickly sorted by pooling our resources.

Both our track day and competitive events are written up in the magazine with plenty of photos capturing the full flavour of the event.

Some of our members take part in traditional circuit racing and the club is always ready to publish details on how to support their activities and to report their adventures.

It is from this type of use of our cars that many of the possible upgrades have been developed. Come to a club event and you should be able to see a car with that idea you have been thinking of. Talk to the owner and find out just how good or bad it really is before you spend your money.

Pictures are good, movies must be better! A growing number of members now run digital in board video cameras to capture the action. These video segments are superbly edited together to make up the annual club DVD/video. And they are not 5 minute wonders. We haven't done a 3 hour DVD set yet but 2 hours has been exceeded. Club supplied clips have also been used from the club archive for TV adverts and BBC magazine type programs. The DVD and videos are available for purchase separate to membership fees.

The club also run a website that is available to the public at large. Check it out at

www.gtd40club.co.uk

From the club website you can download video clips or look at archived pictures of members cars both static and in action. You can get your car listed too just by letting us have the details and pictures you want up there. The video clips are very popular indeed, especially the clips of moments that were not supposed to happen!

Over the years the club has arranged factory visits to many places of special interest to GT40 owners. These range from Aston Martin in Newport Pagnell and Crosswaite and Gardner (classic restoration and fabricator) in Sussex to Quaife (gearbox specialist) and Riccardo Engineering (worldwide automotive consultancy). We don't do many visits as the right opportunity doesn't always come along often, but we aim to keep the quality of these visits high.

We are also lucky enough to be invited to join up with the GT40 Enthusiasts Club to attend some trips with them and these have included in the past their trips to Le Mans and to other factories such as Ray Mallock Ltd. Always great trips.

Each year we have an AGM and barbeque where we look back on the years events with pleasure and the membership get the opportunity to help mould the latest ideas for the clubs developmnent.

If you live in the UK, it is possible to be as involved as you want to be, with exciting events as well as the magazine and DVD/video to look forward to. If you live overseas you are perhaps more restricted to the magazine and DVD/video (format dependant) but some overseas members have in the past used their new found friends in the UK as a great source of accommadation and as hard to find parts supplier.

The club can offer something to almost everyone with an interest in cars.

Not bad for £30 per year, really?
