Early GT40 Mk I Rear Tail Lights

Hey Guys,

Since I need to re-paint my car does anyone know what kind of lights were used by the earlier Mk I? I want to install the pair used at that time but don't have much info as to what make they were etc..?

Any push in the right direction would be appriciated.

Thanks

Chris

If I'm not mistaken, I believe they belonged to a Corvair.

Posted recently: MkII Tail Lights with a link to Clark's Corvair parts.

Other posts mention 62-63 Corvair lamps for MKII's and 60-61 Corvair lamps for the MKI's

they were uk sourced rear lights, so very unlikely to be corvair lights.

I would look to Land Rover rear lights as a starter.
Are the lenses flat or domed ?
are they held in with 2 or 3 screws, or a push in chrome ring ?
what diameter are they ?

Adjustable Spoiler

Chris:
Sorry to deviate from the subject of tail lights, but where did you get the pattern for your adjustable spoiler? Other than the color, it looks like that used on the Wyer cars. I am thinking about fabricating one, so I need dimension and material specs: Aluminum alloy, gage, slot dimensions, mounting provisions and that kind of stuff. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank, Tom

Chris, you might find the lights in the Europa catalog. I don't have the catalog right now, I lent it to a friend. They must have a web site. The Corvair lights were used just on the GT40 MKII.

Correct Rear Lights.

Chris,
Having spent dozens of hours sourcing my early lights, IMHO i feel i can provide the correct answer.

In fact, there were an even earlier style of light fitted, than the one you posted a photograph of. If you check out photos of the prototype cars you will see what i mean.
In your photograph the lights are Lucas units, model numbers

Amber Unit & Red Unit: L691

These are the same units as fitted for turn and stop, to Austin Healey 3000.
You can find these units, remanufactured on eBay quite often.
They are also available at
www.holden.co.uk
where you will find an impressive supply of remanufactured Lucas parts.
Do a search on Holden's site using L691.
Hope that helps.

Thanks very much guys for your advice, I was aware that the Corvair lights were used for the Mk II but didn't see anything else that looked correct for the Mk I.

Tom - this pic is only used as a reference so people know what the heck I'm talking about - this is chassis 1043 hence not my Mk I but I do remember there was a couple of threads regarding the rear spoiler, try the CAV forum, I think one of the Gulf cars had one.

I'll check and see if there is a catalog for the Europa product and I will have a look that the Lucus lights Charley recommended.

Cheers

Chris

Thanks Chris, Charely - The Europa website lists both amber and red stop lights in snaplight @ 84mm dia and winged at 75mm dia. The Holden units don't post the dia on the site.

Not sure which ones are correct?

Chris, the next time see Ben Levy's GT #1030, I'll see if there is a part number on the lights. Ben, if you are reading this post, you don't remember the part numbers do you? I say this because Ben really knows his GT inside out!
