Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Gents:
I have taken measurements and the wire I initially used is 3/32 (.093) and it looks to be stiff enough to do the job.
I will try to do a few trials with some 3/32 filler rod and see what happens and we can proceed from there.
Cheers
Phil

Sounds great Phil! Can you describe the design you are considering?

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

I was thinking I have seen something like the top red spring in the middle on a GT40 some time ago...

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Michael:
I had actually made some of those Red ones (Top Center), in various lengths as the shorter ones are a bear to compress and get into the adapter, I have since looked at an original car that had some quite a bit longer that I felt hung out a bit too much, I will bend a few tomorrow at the shop and post the photos with some dimensions to get some feedback.
Cheers
Phil

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Excellent, keep me in the loop if you would, thanks! I ordered a set of the hex nuts and am hoping they will leave just a little thread left exposed so I can drill holes and use the springs. The stock KOs have 1 3/4" of thread depth and the nuts are suppose to have 1 1/2" so hoping it all works out so that there is room.

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Are those nuts from Vintage Wheels? I was thinking of ditching my Spinners and going nuts with the locking pins.

I think Mike Drew's design spring looks pretty good.

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Here are the few I had time to knock up with a little time today. They are not totally perfect, but give an idea. I tried all three in my wheels and the 2 1/2 turn fit the best.
I made a 1 1/2 turn, a 2 1/2 turn and a 4 1/2 turn going a little over board but it gave me an idea of how they fit.
The 1 1/2 turn is just too flimsy, and the 4 1/2 is kind of clunky to fit into the snout. Here are some photos that show some preliminary results.
I will try and do a 3 1/2 turn and see how that one works. The middle clip in the 3 is the 2 1/2 turn clip.

Cheers
Phil

Skippy,

Yes, that looks perfect for my Vintage Wheel. But so far, no success for the source, yet.

Skippy I have a roll of the wire hanging on my wall at work just for these jobs.
You are welcome anytime and while your at it make a few for Yuji.

I will even get it down off the nail for you.

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Sorry guys, the reason this has gone no where is my fault. I do have my spinners and adaptors now so I will visit the place mentioned in the early posts and get some info.

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Guys, any progress on this? I will defer to others if they are going to make these. If not, then I am going to set out to soon to source these or have them made if I can't find what I am after.

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

I have a contact in the wire business who could be persuaded to do this. I actually talked to him about these before.

He could do them but to get them done to a professional finish would need a big enough order. We discussed Stainess, spring, piano wire etc and he believed piano would be he best.

I am happy to get onto him again but would need to know dimensions that people are looking at and if we can standardise on a size I could order and ship out worldwide (No profit on my part).

I believe he was looking at minimum order of around 500 pcs. Not huge and the bigger the quantity the better the price but I don't really want to hold onto springs for 10 years!

Ian

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

Michael and Ian:
I spoke to a friend of mine in the same business that Ian described and the specs were similar, 500 pcs min and about $3.50 each, as you said Ian I could not afford to have 500 pins laying around, and possible size differences that make the pins useless for others.
I think I just might bend a few and take my chances on my own wheels.
Cheers
Phil

Re: Source for locking pin for pin drive adaptor

I can take 20, but not 500. Have checked with other pin drive for Cobra vs my Vintage Wheel adaptor, and found there are slight difference in size but not significant.
