Steering rack

Hello, Does anybody know what 1st gen Roaring Forties used for thier steering racks? It was built in 1999.

My car is making a horrible clunking noise when driving. Upon inspection I found the the left side inner tie rod end moving about. I pulled back the boot and pieces of plastic fell out.

The inner rod is tight. It's the rack shaft itself that is moving because of the spent bushing. It's righthand drive. Any info on this will be greatly appreciated

Re: Steering rack

Pretty sure the early ones had a TC - TD Ford Cortina rack.
Have not tried these guys, but they may still have the inner bush in stock.

Re: Steering rack

Clayton, After looking at mine and searching the web for Cortina racks, I believe you are correct. Thank You!

Now my mission is to find a bushing stateside. I know... "Good luck Chuck" If anybody knows where in the U.S. I can locate one or two, Please chime in.

If not, I'll be forced to buy overseas.

Re: Steering rack

Patrick, you should be able to buy the bush ex UK, we can still get them down here in AUS, cheap as chips and easy to install.

Re: Steering rack

Hi John
I'm pretty sure Patrick is after the plastic inner bush.
This is a pic of an Escort's bush, but both are very similar.

Hi Patrick
As with John, if you cant find any let us know.

Re: Steering rack

There's a gentleman on the forum here who has one of those special Lotus Cortinas...I believe he vintage races it. I would bet he knows where to get Cortina parts in the US. Do a search for Lotus Cortina.

Re: Steering rack

Different cortina Cliff.
Lotus Cortina is pretty and TC cortina is not, and do not share the same mechanicals.

The bush has lugs on it to hold it in the tube.
Machine it out of nylon and pop rivit it in with 2 rivits through the tube into the bush.

peice of cake.

Re: Steering rack

Big thanks to all that replied. I'm still looking for these parts in the U.S., But it's looking grim.

I'm on vacation in a few weeks and want to drive the wheels off this thing before winter sets in. Thinking of a trip to Watkins Glen. They do "Thunder Road" tours two times a day everyday except when they have events.

$25.00 gets you 3 laps around the long track. Did it in the Porsche and it was a blast! If the pace driver is in a good mood, you can wick em' up pretty good.

I'm open to all and any who can supply or lead me to this bushing. I've noted already said suggestions.
