Uprights/wheels and stuff

Hey guys, I think its time I started a thread for the uprights and stuff I'm making for my car and other guys that have seen my bits and pieces. I started way back in 09 when I made rear/front uprights for my M20 project. Along with transaxle I have had uprights cast and John has got 2 sets of me and Rod brace is getting a full set made now. The rears are a close representation of a M8F/M20 and the fronts started the same way but with Rods I have made them so both Lug and Radial calipers can be used the rears will have the same set up. I attach some photos of the rears and I will get some fronts up soon. I'm also making Replica M8 wheels.

Leon, I have seen photos of the ones John has, currently looking at my options for the GT40. Yours look very good.

Hi sorry no photos yet but the ones I have are too large to down load so will try to get some up in the next few days but I'm on 4 days/4 nights so may not get to my workshop for a week.

Cheers Leon

Not really, they are a copy of M8 McLaren ones, The fronts are nothing like the proper GT40 ones, That said neither are most of the Kit car ones available on the market. The RCR ones are milled from billet, very nice but not authentic looking, DRB do cast ones that are very good as well

6061 then heat treated to T5. It is the same material that Albins and Holinger use for there Cases. I did use 5008 for the first set I made for myself but they were solid not hollow core. The reason I used that was it was age hardening and didn't require heat treatment. I changed after talking to the foundry guys who advised me that the 6061 was far better for more complexed castings.

Cheers Leon

They do use a special process that was explained to me a few years back when I first got them to cast my first T/A case that deals with porosity it was too complicated for my limited brain power but needless to say I have never had a porosity issue. These guys are the company that casts all of Holinger and Albins cases, so they know their stuff. The Main Guys are Steve and Tom Morrison. They owned a company in Australia that developed most of the Holinger patterns, V8 Super car Trannys, suspension, and injection manifolds for HDT. Cambrian Engineering bought them out about 4yrs ago and Steve and Tom came with the deal. Tom personally makes the molds and pours my stuff, Steve (the Dad) is a pattern maker and has helped me heaps with getting my patterns to a good standard.

Cheers Leon

I'm going to try to post some Photos so hope they turn out. Ok they did come out. the 4 together are Johns and a set for a friend of Johns. The Raw rear ones are for Rod and the front ones are also for Rod They just need the Bearings and Axles pressed in and the top mount plate. I will post some pictures of the other things I'm doing as well

Leon, are they commodore hubs? Ie 5 x 120mm. should be easy enough to convert to Corvette speck ie 5 x 120.75 (think its 5 x 4.75”?) using some oversized knurled ARP wheel studs and a milling machine.
I’m looking for something I can use that is similar to the Commodore arrangement but in a ford PCD 5 x 4.5” (5 x 114.3mm).
Might need to take a trip to the wreckers and go for a walk with a measuring tape.

Thanks Jac, I have a Toyota one in the shed at the moment, just need to find a bigger hammer, more heat or a puller to get the bugger apart. I have the retaining nut off and have been putting some RP7 on it.

Yes, they can be tight, I made a puller out of a forged XA Falcon front hub and used fine thread 1" bolt to put some pain on mine, son borrowed it for his 300zx and got it all bolted up to find his just slide off... seems to depend on rust buildup on splines more than anything that could be called precision

hhhmmmmm......
maybe 2 disc brakes back to back, somehow bolted to the hub, then a jacking screw through the centre......
I will have a look and see if I can find something in the shed.

Cheers
Ryan

Nope, discs will cast iron, liable to break at crucial moment.
