The only problem with them I see is they dump to the right but couldnt I just cut the colectors off bend them a little and weld the colectors back on they even sell a tonable set with the collectors not yet welded. they are alot cheeper then what we have ben paying for headers and you can have them jet coated for 150 to 300 depending on who does it or 40 if you have an oven big enough to put them in and coat them your self.

Earl,

The price certainly is right, but the collectors appear to be one on top of the other, thus creating a major height clearance problem. Perhaps Schoenfeld would be interested in building headers specifically for GT40's, if there were enough interest.

I'm way ahead of you... The near side collector reposition looks fairly straight forward and is at a good height. The far side will require some routing and additional bends.

Those look great but no way will they fit in a RFGT40. The highest pipe connot be any higher at the rear than the lower part of the intake manifold.
I'm real curious as to how it works out for you. Please keep us posted.

If you are looking at going this direction, you can find 180degree headers of this sort in the Coleman catalog. Coleman caters to the NASCAR/Stock Car crowd. They have excellent prices and, as a result, I have bought several things from them. http://www.colemanracing.com/

They have a set that are not 180 degrie heders and the clectors are side buy side and they are a little cheaper so if you didnt minde not having them 180 they would probably fit in the car better.

[GT40 NZ]

Hi guys,

Just to refresh I now own GT40 Replications in NZ now refered to as GT40 NZ. I have read the problems with Headers. I intend to ramp up spares and specialist parts only for GT40's.

Below (hopefully) you can see a set of excellent headers (actually sitting on a 351). I had intencded to offer this and a full 180 cross over set.


This set has straight through mufflers contained in the lovely big curves.

What do you think? This set is heat treated mild steel but stainless could also be done. To allow custom fits I intended to end at the muffler flanges so allowance for different types of mufflers, engine hieghts up and down and exit clearances can be best judged when finally installed.

If I'm on the right track and so I can judge what the demand (and priority) is anyone want that type or a 180 cross over set?

Also what is the price expectation? I know I should set a price but I also have to realistic. Other sets seem the range from the US$500 as in the link but will take mods to get right to $2500 plus.

Hi Dave, personally I prefer the ones that Frank Catt has made for the "Yellow Peril". I apologize for not having a picture, but they are a set of continous curves without the sharp bends evident in your pic. (But you must realize that this is a personal opinion and it may be mine exclusively.)
Stainless is not a requirement, I think Malcolm has been thrashing his mild steel ones for 10 years and they still are holding up.
Full crossover is a priority, becasue the sound is beautiful!!! - Time is not an issue as I will not need them until late in 2003 at the earliest- Cost should be reasonable, because if it is too high I'll make them myself.
Mufflers, I don't care I live in New Hampshire and the Harleys up here run straight pipes and no one even pays attention...Must be the "live free or die" attitude from our license plates.., so size and looks are more important than noise supression.

A while ago, somebody posted a picture of the most boootiful set of headers.
The engine was mounted on a stand, and the pic showed the RHS with the headers fitted.
They were a silver colour and were reflected in polished aluminium rocker covers.
The post was signed off with "Roaring Forties Mk 1, 347 with 8 barrel fuel injection, BRM pin drives"
I have searched but cannot find.
If they are YOURS, how about another pic, and who made them?

Good luck with GT NZ.

Opinions are like belly buttons...
everyone has one....
But I don't like the double back headers.
I think they clutter up the engine bay.
Just my opinion. And they must cost more
than "normal" once through systems.

I'll bet most owners prefer a system that
closely mimics the original, just replacing
the straight through section with a high
performance muffler(s).

Regarding material, I assume ceramic coating
is less costly than stainless steel, so that's what most folks do. If I were you
I'd offer the coating as an option for those
who prefer to deal with a local coater.

Pricewise, you can check the prices on other websites (Tornado/RF 40/etc), but be careful
with "stocking" since I don't know if 302
headers for a GT-NZ would fit a Tornado, GTD, ERA, RF 40. There may be "subtle"
chassis differences.

Is this purely, performance or have you analysed the exhoust notes?? I have a few recored for analysis if your interested. GT40 NZ Cevy, GT 40 NZ Ford, GT40 NZ Race 302 and GTD40 Ford.....

Dave, No real analysis,just listening to multiple passes of various cars at Goodwood. I have seen video of 302s with and without full crossover systems and 351s with and without full crossover systems.The 302s with full crossover takes the "best sound" trophy every time!

I spent many hours fabricating a custom system for my turbocharged Bug some years ago. It was made of mild steel and was ceramic coated from the start. It has been sent back several times over the years to be recoated because of chips and surface rust starting. While the outside still looks good, the inside (which is supposed to be coated also) has suffered corrosion from condensate laying in the system. I had to replace several tubes this year and have the system recoated "again". The car is run as a daily driver during summer months only. Sits all winter.

I swore I'd never again spend the time and money to fab a custom system out of mild steel. The next one will be stainless. Coated? Not sure yet. The only reason would to be to reduce underbody temps. The GT40's system WILL be stainless. Not a question or option to me.
My 2 cents worth.

Finally done,

after $650.00 worth of stainless tubing, one slightly bashed little finger, 170 hours labor, and some amount of cussing, my headers are finally finished.

Yes, that's great work indeed, congratulations.
Be sure to tell us what the note is like.
Although I haven't exactly been too experienced in working with stainless, the little experience I've had has proved to be pretty difficult, it seems to be pretty bad to work with.
How do you bend the tubing, just oxy and bend through a jig?

Again, Please allow me to remind the group that near-identical-to-original, 180 degree crossover exhaust, are available for 302's and 351W's. These are fabricated from fixtures developed off of an original Mark I un-altered system, unfortunately though, from a chassis number I am not at liberty to disclose at this time. If you go back in the "For Sale" section to about early summer time frame, you should be able to find photos Lyn Larsen was very kind to have posted. If the photos can not be located, feel free to send me an email and I will send photos. All the discussion over the last year about the trials and tribulations many of you have experienced trying to figure out exhaust baffles me (no pun intended) because you will not find a more accurate exhaust system anywhere else. These exhaust are readily available, I will not accept payment until yours are boxed and ready to ship, and without an original system sitting next to these, you will absolutely not be able to tell that they are reproductions. What are you guys waiting for? The answer really is here....
