BMW M1 gearbox

I have been hearing about people using BMW M1 boxes for there gt40s and all of that. I know they are ZF boxes. Why do you need to convert them to LHD to use them in a LHD car? Do the cost about the same as a RBT 5spd box. I would appreciate any response.

You do not need to convert them to LHD for an LHD car- they are already LHD. As far as I know, all BMW M1s were LHD. The unit needs to be converted for a RHD GT40 like my car. I think in a LHD GT40 replica you would be okay, although I am not sure how you would route the linkage.

The last time I talked to RBT, they were using the M-1 boxes for all of their new boxes. They had a new design top cover for the unit also. Your best bet would be to call or email them for specifics.

Mike,
My MDA has a ZF2 with BMW M1 output shafts and the rear chassis was specially tooled up for during the initial build. It was the first, so it meant that I had to buy the transaxle up front and Mark Sibley has done a marvellous job as usual.
RBT built the new box as a special, at no apparent extra cost.
Good fortune!.
