Gear change rose joint

Just uncovered a small issue with my gear change. The rose joint (arrowed), as well as articulating, needs to slide up and down the rod in its bore. The rod was mild steel and a little corrosion had siezed the rose joint onto the rod. I removed the joint, and cleaned it up, and the gear change feels much better now. Maybe better to plate it, put rubber boots on, or use a different material.
Anyone with a similar layout should check this out, particularly if the car is standing for a while.

regards
Dave
