Rep Power: 6 | Where to find Audi 016 or 01E in Australia I have just about read all the post's now on Audi boxes 016 and 01E, i have decided to use one of these boxes.
Any help on locating one would be appreciated and some questions answered.
1. The 016 box that is used is it the one with the hydraulic or cable operated clutch fork. (i have only been able to locate the cable one so far)
2. What model Audi did they come out in here in Australia?
3. Anyone know whether i can actually obtain one in Australia or should i look abroad?
Thank You in advance for any help

Rep Power: 7 | Re: Where to find Audi 016 or 01E in Australia Steve,
My 016 came out of a 1987 Audi 5000. It has the hydraulic clutch release. I believe the transaxle from any non-Quattro 5000 between 1984 and 1987 will work. I don't know if that model was also sold in Australia. Also, the 016 was built with several different 5th gear and final drive ratios. There's a date and ratio code stamped on the top of the bell housing. Someone posted a list a while back cross referencing the codes to the gear ratios. The salvage yard will ask for the code when you inquire about the transaxle.
I used car-parts.com to find it. The site is a database of salvage yard inventory around the country. You tell them what you want and where you are and they come back with a list of available inventory in your area. That particular site only serves the US and Canada but there must be something similar available in Australia.

That is because manual 016 equipped Audis were never imported into Australia (unless they were done so privately). The chance of finding one is slim..... On the 01E front, the box you are after is out of the 2WD A8 and as you can imagine, this particular vehicle has never been sold into Australia by the importers. Whilst there are plenty of manual TTs around, they are of the quattro variety and not suitable to "our" application ....
Your best bet is to import one - 01E from Germany or eastern Europe (don't know how you would do that...) or to go through a breaker yard and shipping company for an 016 box out of the states. If you do go for a box out of the states, it is probably a good idea to get a couple of boxes at the same time.
Cheers

Actually doesn't belong to me, it's a photo I took of an 016 box that was lying around in the RF workshop about 2 years ago being fitted with an LSD and is probably now in one of the RF cars sent to the States...
Cheers

They are currently out of stock till next month or so, there old supplier in Vic is currently looking for some more in the UK but will not have them untill the end of this year.I think i have absoloutley exhausted all avenues at this point. I did speak with a guy from a Swan Porsche who will use his contact in South Africa to try and get one for me, apparantly heaps of Auldi's there, he also said his Mechanic use to work for Superformance small world.

Any particular rush to get a tranny?
I'm sure there are some nice folks on the US left coast
that could send you one....but the freight cost will
probably be more than the tranny. If RF will cut you a
good deal, I'd think that's the way to go.
