ford pinto/2wd cosworth gearbox mounting

i am thinking of fitting a turbo cosworth engine with renault gearbox in a replica 40.i have the dimensions for the renault bellhousing fixings but need the them for the pinto/cosworth block.its basically the radius of the starter motor holes i need from the centre of the crank for a 2wd cosworth so that i can slightly repositon the starter motor.
thanks brian.

The Pinto (Kent) block is the same block used by Lotus in the later mid-engined Twincam Europas. So you might be able to get a ready-made bellhousing from a place like Europa Engineering, or perhaps they could point you to someone who has them.

Re: ford pinto/2wd cosworth gearbox mounting

The Pinto and the Kent block are NOT the same, the Pinto was never fitted into any form of Lotus. The bolt pattern at the rear of the blocks is the same, one of Ford's greatest innovations, so many of the ford based gearboxes will fit. You need to make up an adaptor plate to mate the Renault box to your Pinto/Cosworth block. If you need to see what the Ford dimensions are, I have plenty in the workshop at present. What puzzles me, is why would you want to put a YB turbo motor into a GT40 when you could put a 302, which is more correct, cheaper, and has much more torque and power for much les effort......and it sounds much better!

Re: ford pinto/2wd cosworth gearbox mounting

Hi brian. I have the same idea for gt40 here in Norway but that is due to that taxes can kill You with bigger engines. I plan to use a Cossworth engine (not a kent) from a 4WD because the iron block here is stronger, and You can easy do a setup that gives You 400hp and run for a long time, it cost some money but,,,,,. There is a lot of weight saving in use this engine ,So 0-60 is very low.
But I am agree with the others Why do this when You can go for the reel thing.
Try the gearbox from a Audi 2WD A6 -95 -97 2.5 diesel or a audi S4 4,2 v8. The last one is with oilcooler.

Regards Rune

Hi Brian

Might be worth an email/call to 'cossiemetro' here on the forum.... he uses a R21 UN1 box on a 2WD Cosworth motor in a lightweight Metro - rear wheel drive only...

The Pinto block is part of the Kent family of Ford blocks.

Re: ford pinto/2wd cosworth gearbox mounting

It might be part of the same family (although that link makes it read like it wasn't
the same to me since the new pinto engine would replace it) but I am pretty sure the
deck height is totally different, meaning the blocks are not interchangeable.

I was also under the impression that the 1600 x-flow block had a slightly higher deck
height than the block used in the elans, so while its bolt pattern was the same they
too were not really interchangeable. I'm not fully sure of this, as it is based on
discussions ages ago with a friend who was having his elan S4 engine rebuilt at the
same time I was building my x-flow for the Caterham.

I did a quick google. This link would suggest the x-flow bolt pattern is different to the Pinto:

Brian, why not try ringing one of the engine builders around london.
I know there is a good ford specialist somewhere near Westerham (build race engines).
I'm sure they'd know, and probably be able to tell you exactly what combination of
flywheel, clutch etc you would need.

If you don't believe me, talk to Phil Price of Connaught Competition Engines, near Maidstone in Kent. He knows what he is talking about--it's his business!
Some people on this website would give advice (in the best of faith) that will give you problems.
