Novelty clear rocker covers

Hot off the press (wish I could take decent pics) this see thru tappet cover moulded in polycarbonate (bullet proof) and alternatively for melt resistance polysulphone. I can just see all the hot rodders goin' for this one
So what do you think fellas???
(yes it is a sschev, it was the easiest to do)

Re: Novelty clear rocker covers

The only thing I've seen like that was some covers that had removable tops with a clear panel. So, you could see the valvetrain, but the problem was that heat distorted it over time and in the end, the ones I remember seeing were yellowed and not that clear at all. Do these avoid that issue?

Re: Novelty clear rocker covers

The PC ones would be clear as glass, PS (Ultem) has yellowish tint. Available with LED lights in sync with valve and spark timing --- just need the service of an electronics wiz

Re: Novelty clear rocker covers

Just thought I would let you guys know that flatchat is a very modest fellow, he is also extremely talented, not only did he personally make the die (tooling) for this little item he also moulded it, over here in Aussieland he is better known as B&C Plastics and is really quite good at making things, metal things and plastic things are a specialty, if there is some tricky little thing that you need get in touch with him, he can do it.

Re: Novelty clear rocker covers

I work in the plastics industry and would only use the clear polycarbonate rocker covers for demonstration only. While polycarbonate is quite tough it is not resistent to petrochemicals. The covers will eventually yellow and crack at the attachment points. Ultem would be more resistent and would be able to handle the heat and chemical attack better but is a light beer bottle brown and much more expensive. Acrylic is more resistent to petrochemicals than polycarbonate but starts out at a much lower tensile strength (more brittle). All polymers used under the hood by the auto makers are resistent to oils, grease and temperature. These materials are typically PBT, Nylon, polypropylene, and other various blends and thermosets as well as specially treated rubbers and silicones.

Also, do not use thread locking compounds around or near polycarbonate when securing it to something with screws. They will craze and crack the material in a matter of minutes. Keep PC away from most cleaning solvents. Polycarbonate even has trouble standing up to repeated washing in a dishwasher especially with liquid detergents. It will eventually craze with microcracks and cloud up. This happens to clear food processor housing, clear blender housing, etc. These items will last much longer if washed by hand. my

Re: Novelty clear rocker covers

Spot on Gary,a Cellulosic (screw driver handles)or PET maybe another option. There are plenty of plastics used in the automotive field these days, but clear see thru items maybe limited to display purposes only

Thanks for the very kind words Fran, Ron and Denis--I used to feel humbled and embarrased when I gave you a small bill for all the large work done Now I don't anymore

Re: Novelty clear rocker covers

Flatchat made my glasses using some of his "rosetinted" plastic lenses..... ...so that explains it....
