I know that I should be putting a FORD into my GT40 kit car, but I wanted a BIG BLOCK with lots of cubic inches and I have to keep it on a tight budget. Yea, like how can you have a tight budget and build a big block?? That means that I can not afford a high dollar transaxle that will survive the torque of the BIG engine I want. I also have plans to put twin turbos on the engine. I have to have something that will make my car "unique".
The only transaxle that is cheap that will take that kind of power potential is the GM Turbohydro 425 from the '70s Toronados and Cadillacs. So I decided on the TH425, and that means that with a GM transaxle I could try and "adapt" a Ford engine or use what came native to the transaxle. The budget says to stick with GM because that is cheaper. And I can also find BBC parts cheaper also. Now you know why the Chevy engine was selected. I really don't care what brand name it has on it as long as it is low budget and high power.
Hey, I've got a Chrysler 440 in my T-Bucket simply because I was able to buy it already rebuilt with high performance parts for $1,000. The downside is that I have not been able to find anyone with a set of chrome side pipes that fit the 440. Does anyone have some?
I am paying $1,250 to have my transmission shop build me a TH425 transaxle that will easily hold 800 lb-ft of torque. They are building it like you would build a drag strip TH400 automatic. It cost me 3 times that for my Porsche 930 turbo transaxle for my 911 V-8 car and the 930 is limited to half as much torque. Being that the TH425 is an automatic, my wife and kids could even drive it. And it will be a lot easier to cruise main street with the automatic anyway.
