Studs or bolts.

Hi all I am looking into getting studs or bolts to fit the headers . What do you guys use ?? I have ally heads .... Thank all

John...

Bolts, preferably with a 12 point 3/8" head, one other little tip... grab a new 3/8" UNC plug or bottoming tap and run it into each threaded hole, some manufacturers do not do this and it means the bolt if slightly too long can bind in the thread, or if too short does not engage enough threads which in turn means a thread is more likely to get stripped at some point. Depending on the flange plate thickness you should be able to use a 1" long bolt which would mean ~5/8" thread engagement in a perfect world. Stainless bolts in alloy can have problems if high moisture is present, I would use the steel items to avoid that possibility of seizure.

I use studs with 12-point nuts. The studs provide a place to hang the header while attaching the nuts, and the stud will fully engage the threads, so the worry of too long/short is eliminated.

Hi John,
I’ve used stainless steel cap-head bolts, which I’ve lock-wired and copper-slipped. This route was chosen as I had a tight clearance to the manifold and its also easier to access them with an allen key<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
Also, most alloy heads have steel thread inserts, so there isn’t too much of an issue that Jac-Mac has highlighted <o:p></o:p>

'Most ?, Andy... I just checked all the alloy heads I have in shop at moment... Only Edelbrocks have inserts in exhaust header bolt hole, RHS, AFR, Pro Action, Dart, Chi 3v, Alan Root are NOT inserted...The AFR heads are the worst for thread engagement only 3/8" on the outers & 1/2" on the inners ( dual pattern).

I like the idea of using studs and then nuts - I used Stage 8 bolts on my Cobra with aluminum heads - never had an issue but I did before using Stage 8. Costly but worth it.

I'd have to agree. I've never seen them on 3 different sets of alloy heads from different manufactures (AR, AFR, and of course the OEM).
