Starter motor issues

Hi
I have 1 year old starter for my 302 - it's the type without an integral solenoid. It has worked ok since being installed, but now (more often than not) it fails to engage and just spins (i.e. the bendix is not thrown). I've checked it and all seems to be OK. I've checked the wiring and that's OK. When it does engage, it spins the engine perfectly.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

The bendix may be being thrown but the over-running clutch inside the bendix has turned loose. You'd need to replace just the bendix rather than the whole starter.
Remove starter and bench test in a vice. If the bendix is thrown, you've found the problem.
