Tuning the Ford 302

Peeps,

I need to educate myself in depth concerning how the 302 functions, and how it can be tuned. I have dug about for suitable documentation, but frankly have not been impressed so far. Perhaps you have found just the book - do let me have your recommendations!

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,
I too bought my engine parts from Real Steel and have been very satisfied. I'm a retired engineer from the race engine business but had never built a 302 before doing one for my RCR GT40 about 18 months ago. There's plenty to read in books and on the web though! So my advice would be do your research, decide on what type of engine you want to suit your aims with the car, spec the engine in detail, check your budget and then buy the best quality parts. In my book a bog standard, driveable and reliable unit will always win over some wild thing! Power is relatively easy but associated reliability and driveability in a high performance engine is much harder to achieve.
Finally, when you come to the build, if you are not sure of something then stop and find out from experts and specialists.
You'll have a lot fun doing this engine!!!
Cheers

Thanks chaps - it really seems that the 'net is that (deep) well of info. I have already had useful pointers to various sources on the net. Another frequent reference is to Real Steel, who have already helped me with some ancillaries. I absolutely agree about the trade-off between reliability and power, Roger. I judge that one could go to 350bhp without having to worry about reliability (assuming quality parts and proper construction) - would I be right?
cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,
My engine is specced for 375bhp with a four barrel Holley. It drives very well and is very responsive. By all means look at the downdraught Webers, they look great but in reality the Holley works great and is simple to install, adjust and maintain. I went for an all steel, zero balance bottom end and alloy heads.
Cheers
Roger
