CAV gt40 headlights

Hi guys,
Anybody with a CAV car can you give me the width and height of your headlights and the manufacturer name on the glass if possible.
many thanks
dave

Dave, if that does not work, I have a friend taking delivery of a CAV early next month. We should be able to answer your request soon. Brian

hi guys,
thkx for the response. We did not get that car here in SA. I still need the dimensions to match it with a car here. Does anybody know what the original MKI used? This must have been a commonly used light at the time.Robert @RF give me the size as 220mm x 110mm (86.6in x43.3in) which would appear to be a very rare size. The closest I can get is either 175mm x 120mm or 190mm x 132mm. I would like it close to original as possible.
cheers
dave

RF indicates that if you don't have the Cibe orginals the lights from the Renault R12 are almost identical in size.

However, they are almost impossible to locate. Definitely impossible in the US as the car was never sold here, maybe impossible in Germany as well. If sure they are probably available in France.

Other cars that had similar sized lights were the Renault R12, early Vauxhall Chevettes, early Hillman Hunters (not MKII model), and MK I Ford Escorts. All slightly different, but very close in dimensions.

I have a set of Renault R-12 headlights I bought from Canada. I will sell them to you for what I paid for them $120. They use H4 bulbs. But no sidelights.

There are a few NOS original type Cibie 240 lamps available int eh USA from Aardvark enterprises in California. They are out of the original tungsten bulb ones but still have a few left of the halogen type, which is what I orderd formy GT40. They are not cheap, but they are the closest thing to the 1965 light that is available. Although the MKI cars' specs mention lights by SEV Marchal, I have never seen, in my limited travels, a car with Marchal lamps. In any event, Marchal was bought up by Cibie.

Lynn: well, you're right. Unfortunately I ordered a pair of them from Gunther before I saw the posting. I will get the driving lights from Daniel Stern, though- do you know which of the lights currently made are closest to the original-style lamp that went in the plexiglass covered recess down next to the front clip opening? In the old photos, some cars have round ones that look kind of like aircraft landing lights, and some cars have rectangular ones. Let me know if you have any info on this. Thanks!

I have the small rectangular lights in the lower light recess on my GTD & they are simply a side light. The stock headlights are very poor so I'd also like to add driving lights.

IMO the best looking (& probably the most functional) are the round landing light type, but I don't know where to get them, or if there is an off the shelf light that will suffice..

I believe some people have used Cessna landing lights for the round driving lights. The rectangular ones were apparently a Lucas item (possibly Lucas Square 4 or Pilot 65?). Bosh reportedly have a similar driving light still available ex Gremany, called something like the "Pilot 100". Dimensions should be roughly 130-135mm x 70mm.

My source on the scene at Sears Point this weekend reports that CAV was showing an engineless car there (at the SAAC mini-nats), and that the headlamps are marked CIBIE.

Jim, to answer your question specifically, no I don't know which headlights were put down there on original cars. But, as you can see from the replies, I don't think there is a standard answer. Different teams/owners put different things down there. Personally, I have put the rectangular (actually oval) fog lights above the turn/parking lights. I have put driving lights in the tops of the nostrils on either side of the radiator opening. These are the oval projector type lights which are also available in a round shape. I believe that these projector lights would work very much like the landing lights mentioned.

I really think that what you decide to do with lighting down there, it is completely open to individual taste/interpretation. It all depends on who/what you use as the gold standard for what is original. I feel there is just not enough consistency to make dogmatic statements concerning many things like this.

We´ve been throu this before...
Marchals did they use.
GT40 made ones...
Does not find them self on any other car.
Specially made, like 99% of the car was, or they ordered especially to "differ"...
123 x 233 mm did not use side lightning inside, just an H1 bulb.
Some used a head light with two bulbs...
Hi beam as an extra bulb...(with internally mounted reflective walls..sort of..to get the light were intended)
I wrote about this in earlier posts...
There are different Marchal´s, Cibié´s and Valeo´s who still share the same housing pattern.
Cibie bought Marchal, Valeo bought it all in modern times...
more or less hard to find these different lights.
Non is a easy find thou.
prices vary as well, of course.
Any body gives you different dimensions, they are out to fool you or is them selves uncertain...
Trying to help...

Regarding headlights...the Cibie 240 lights arrived yesterday. They look very authentic, except that they have a slightly concave face which I suspect was done to obtain better focus of the beam. They are HUGE. I will feel pretty stupid if they won't fit in the GT40 headlight opening. They were expensive (nearly $700/set with all the trimmings). If someone finds a cheaper source for this light, let me know. I have not seen its' exact copy on any of the websites mentioned.

Daniel Stern Lightning does not advertise anything on their website that has same dimensions as the GT40 used.
Marchal´s were also still made and sold for quite some time after they were bought by Cibié...
