Interior fabrics.

Any ideas what material was used to cover the centre tunnel & seats on original cars?

Re: Interior fabrics.

Later race cars, such as the Gulf cars, used black nylon with silver grommets. When I rode in prototype GT105, it had black leather without grommets.

Re: Interior fabrics.

Cheers Mark, I had an idea it might be nylon. I particularly like the interior of 1036 on this web site:

Re: Interior fabrics.

I should add, that under the black nylon there is a thin layer of foam on top of sheet metal.

Re: Interior fabrics.

I just had part of the interior of my boat reupholstered in gray Ultrasuede. It is decidedly not original, but I am thinking about using it for the GT40s interior, when we get that far. It wears well, doesn't stain, and comes in a lot of colors. Has anyone else done this?

The nylon is conventional nylon with grommets added (you can get them at a craft store or a camping store).

Re: Interior fabrics.

Jim,

I am doing the dash in black ultrasuede. I had considered Alcontara which is very similar, but it is not carried in the US for some reason. I am using this to avoid any reflectivity off of the dash and because of the qualities of the material you mentioned.

I had considered making wider use of the ultrasuede, but decided not use it because of cost considerations. I will be using a high quality cut loop automotive carpet instead.

Regards,
Lynn

J6 is trimed in Black Brocade as found in 67 Fairlanes trimmed with leather.

Re: Interior fabrics.

Heavy weight black nylon for originality.

Black leather for fire safety.

Nylon burns with toxic fumes and turns into glue as it burns and will stick to you.

Leather supports combustion far less than nylon, and is not toxic or sticky during combustion.

Re: Interior fabrics.

I think you could get a black nomex weave if you want the nylon look with fire safety.

You can't beat leather for look and feel! Especially when dress in the stuff too.

Re: Interior fabrics.

Lynn, there is an outfit in Ohio I think which sells Ultrasuede at a discount, about half price. If you can't find it on the web let me know, I may have some labels or info left. I bought twelve yards of it in gray to do the sofa over in the Hatteras and it was less than $400.
