But I'm sure there is another way too like pull the gearbox apart and see which way up the gear is

Here is how to implement the Lucas switch with park using two switches. Wire it up and try it.

The Lucas motor I have will park in any position...I don't know if yours is similar, but mine has a wiper ring inside that is interrupted by a space that has a separate contact area inside it, when the switch is closed this small contact area becomes live and the motor runs uninterrupted (the remainder of the ring is always live). When the switch is shut off the motor will run until it finds this now dead contact area...the parking location is set by rotating the cover on the motor which moves the wiper ring, and as the cover is rotated the blade will follow it, since the major portion of the ring is live at all times this works with the switch off. I set mine by cycling the motor, mounting the blade, and adjusting the cover slowly until I was happy with the location. Hope all this helps.
Cheers

Rep Power: 4 | Re: Wiper Motor Visited Again!! When I first installed the wiper motor, it was parking on the right had side (drivers side). I needed it to park on the left hand side and all I did was flip the wiper gear box so the flexible rod is on the bottom and it now parks on the left hand side. Easy fix and works perfect.
Just my 2c.

Actually, if you take the bottom switch between the straight up posititon and the on, it will do that. It parks when you take it all the way to OFF postition.
