Brian: I haven't read all the posts, so I'll probably repeat some of what's already been said. But the best thing you can get for shaping aluminum or any sheet metal is Ron Fournier's book "Metal Fabricator's Handbook". It's loaded with something we all need . . . information. As was said, the mallet and shot bag is what you'll need to shape the part you pictured. But a steel body hammer is needed to smooth it once you hammer it into it's final shape.
Be aware that tools aren't the only thing you have to consider when shaping or welding metals. You must have some knowledge of the alloy with which you'll be working. For instance 3003-H14 aluminum shapes like butter and welds very well, but 6061-T6 shouldn't be bent at all. Be aware, too, that materials such as 3003-H14 work harden, so it must be annealed during the shaping process. Lot's to consider . . . .

Rob, I should be thanking you, I had never thought of using the pyro for this application yet run it all over the car at the end of a race looking for temp spikes etc. Now I suppose I will have to buy a new battery each season as it will be flat from all the extra use!

All aluminum body...Thought you might be interested in my newest project. It's the aluminum sister car to the copper 40GT that Ford had at SEMA in 2005 with the GT40 drive train and chassis. My aluminum version is awaiting a ROUSCH sbf and G50 trans. 100% hand hammered aluminum... I'm actualy scared to start working on it | |

It's not my talent... Kirkham made this aluminum body before they made the copper 40GT. I own it now and started checking out the threads on this site to get ideas on chassis and motor combo's. My other cars have flathead's and bajo rear ends so this is a stretch for me. | |

Brian your part done, Yes guys the first thing i did was annealed it.I use a Sharpy it burnes off at annealing temp. you can also use the sutt form torch to cover metal and it too burnes off at annealing temp.then you let part air cool!! Do not quench aluminum!! Let air cool to room temp. This part was very work nardened. A little english wheel and it looks beter. I'll ship it to you monday.

Time to close out this thread...........
As you guys know, I wanted to shape a little bump out for my firewall to clear the water pump pulley. After a little banter, Randy kindly stepped in and offered his assistance. It turns out that for little more than a few pms and some stamps, I now have a nice firewall blister as attested to by the attached pic.
Who would think that a) I would post about this for help? b) that Randy would see my post and c) that he then would be kind enough to shape my part...coincidence or perhaps just good timing..
For those interested, the part will not be covered as there will be no carpets in the car.
