Help Needed to Identify Stering Column

I'm looking to change the steering wheel that I currently have in my car. The problem is I don't know which donor car the coloumn is from and the current wheel has been 'heavily modified' to fit. The kit was a scratchbuild that I got in boxes....so I can't refer back to any manufacturer.

The shaft has a thread at the end for the nut that secures the steering wheel, then there is a parallel splined section (about 22mm diameter), then behind that there is a smooth tapered section.

I can try and get a pic if it helps, but does this sound familiar to anyone? Basically I just want to fit a nicer looking steering wheel, but when I check online to buy something I seem to be drowning in options for all diferent types of boss, adaptors and quick release systems. One of my friends suggested buying a kit where I just chop the end of my column and weld on a new hex or d-shape adaptor that comes with a kit, but I'd prefer to just order the right adapter that fits.

Thanks in advance for an help you can offer.

you could be describing an old ford mk1/2 escort or cortina mk3/4/5 but i have a scimitar gte column that looks similar....triumph maybe?

you may be right....someone even suggested Marina/Ital.....(scary to think what connects me to the car might be a Marina part!!!).

I'm struggling with how to check. Maybe the chop and weld idea would be easier.
