Smith Speedometer Drive problems.

Hiya,

I have a brand new Smiths speedo and drive cable installed with my Renault gearbox, and am having a problem with the drive.

The gearbox drive gear is working correctly, and the speedometer is working correctly when I spin the cable.

However, it appears that the inner cable, at the gearbox end, with its 'square' end, is passing too far through the square output on the drive gear, until the portion of the inner cable is no longer square and is now not being driven by the gear.

Does this make sense?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Otherwise, I am VERY close to being back on the road.

Looking forward to hearing from you all, with lots of ideas.

Finally, thanks to everybody with their help so far. I think I am finally nearing the end of the tunnel!

Cheers.........and a Happy New Year to everybody.

Geoff.

Hi Geoff

If that is the case and the inner cable is going in too far just cut a piece of welding rod or something similar, (nails come in a variety of lengths and thicknesses) and insert that into the drive gear and then fit the inner cable.

The short piece of rod will stop the inner cable from sliding in too far.

Just requires a little bit of careful measuring.

Make sure that the inner cable is pushed all the way into the speedo and allow a couple of mm of slack so that when you screw it all up it does not bind the inner cable up tight.

Should solve your problem.

Hi Dimi,

I've just been reading through some of my old posts.

Your idea was exactly right - I should have thanked you long ago!

Cheers,

Geoff.
