Original 40's steering wheel emblem

I have an emblem for my CAV that I got off a guy that reads ford gt.
I would like to keep things as close to original as possible and wondering did the original cars emblem say gt 40 or ford gt.
Any one ?

Thanks Carman

Carman,

If you checkout my website, you will also see what it should look like.
Note, they were Red, Silver & Black...NOT Blue.

P1083 sports a Red and Blue emblem?

Just a curiosity as I haven't seen the red and black combo.

Cheers

Chris

Charlie,

Is it possible that SOME emblems were red, white, silver and BLUE? It seems rather odd that so many GT40 restorers would have all gotten that detail so wrong. In addition to 1083, 1051 and 1053 are also NOT black.

I can't find photos handy, but I seem to recall that 1040 has blue as well, but a much darker hue.

Can you fill in some details about the black? Was it only certain cars?

Mark

Mark,

There is restoration and then there is restoration.
A fair share of the customers i service are owners of original chassis.
They are to a lesser and greater extent, interested in restoring their cars
and refitting them with parts that mirror those originally fitted.
The two photos explain alot about their different approaches.
Both feature non original steeringwheels as well as non original steeringwheel
emblems. Over the years, my guess is that the larger diameter of the original steeringwheel may have been a problem for ' larger ' drivers.
Especially when undertaking racing duties.
You will also see that the gauges are not as fitted by FAV.
Infact one photo shows gauges that are not even an attempt to replicate the original. My guess is they are from a US manufacturer ?
Both photos seem to feature dashboard warning lights from the 1980's and the white one is missing.
20 to 30 years ago, these cars were nowhere near as valuable and the resources for period correct parts did not exist. I have seen many cars that were restored back then, where i guess they just carried out the work with what was to hand. The hartwell latches are a case in point.
Many cars at Le Mans Classic this year, had alternative latches.
As to the black/blue question.
All i have to go on is my original steeringwheel and having seen three so far unrestored cars.

Andy Sheldon & Dr,

All i can deduce from your comments, is your casual visual obsevations.
Try investing some time into your research, at least.
Pff, replicas,ok.
Andrew, i'm surprised at your comments, claiming to be the oldest replica manufacturer, Tut Tut, lol :embarassed:

I just stated the fact that I have never seen a Black one.

I think your PM was totally uncalled for.

Why dont you post a picture of a Black one?

When we did our boss 20 years or so ago we looked at every original GT40 wheel we could find a picture of and they were all Blue.

Sorry about that.
