The SPF GT40 battery box is very small and when the battery is installed, there is less than ¼ inch of clearance between the metal top cover and the top of the battery terminals. Add the fact that the battery is not held down in any manner and you have a prescription for disaster if you hit a bump or do something that can make the battery “jump” even a slight amount. Shorting the terminals can cause a fire, do damage to the cover, destroy the battery or in the worst case, cause the battery to explode spreading acid all over the inside of the engine compartment. This is a very simple modification. Cut a piece of 1/8 inch thick plastic to fit snuggly inside the battery cover. This prevents the terminals from contacting any metal part. I used ABS that can be purchased at a hobby shop. Other sheet plastic will work just as well. Even a small piece of Formica from a flooring shop will work. The only criteria is that it needs to be non-conductive and be thin.
