Q? fuel testing RON

Looking for test equipment to quik test octane level of pump gas (if such a thing ?)
We have cases of "damaged " carbed HIPO engines supposedly tuned for pump fuel at 98 ULP, as there seems to be no guarantee at the pump.

I know that knock sensors etc etc would help, but that is too late.

Ie:- it would be nice to know that fuel was to spec at the point of use.
Any clues greatly appreciated--------------

Chris,
in the days we raced stock cars and had to run pump fuel, we just used a simple hydrometer to compare brands and filling stations to find the best.
It always came down to Esso and motorway filling stations where they had a quick turn over in sales. Suprising how quickly fuel "goes off" sitting in the stations tanks.

Thanks Mike --we usually choose what appears to be high turn over "servos"
--even then its a gamble and there seems to be a Winter mix and a Summer blend --Like the hydro idea but would have to set some parameters after a load of testing
