Mechanical fuel pumps

Aside from historical accuracy is there reason not to use a mechanical fuel pump? My Roush 427SR came with one, but I don't know its capacity. Is vapor lock more an issue with the location of a mechanical pump? I will be doing some track days. What flow rate is necessary (Holley 770cfm)?
