Thread Gauges:

How many times have you seen or needed a nut or bolt and wondered about the thread size and pitch, metric or SAE? I have several cars that have both metric and SAE hardware on the same car. I also have containers of hardware that I'm not exactly sure what it is, or that I want to check before risking thread damage. The thread gauges shown below are great, and I would highly recommend them. They will give you the answer to all your thread size questions, metric and SAE, male and female. You can get them from www.BoltDepot.com. Just yesterday, I used these about six times while ordering hardware for a new build. (I have a fetish for ARP and other high-end hardware)

I wore these around my neck, like beads, to Cars & Coffee a couple of weeks ago and several people told me the next week that they went home and ordered them, and thanked me profusely.
SAE Sizes Covered:
6-32, 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 1/4-20, 1/4-28, 5/16-18, 5/16-24, 3/8-16, 3/8-24, 7/16-14, 7/16-20, 1/2-13, 1/2-20
Metric Sizes Covered:
4mm x 0.7, 5mm x 0.8, 6mm x 1.0, 8mm x 1.25, 8mm x 1.0, 10mm x 1.5, 10mm x 1.25, 10mm x 1.0, 12mm x 1.75, 12mm x 1.5, 12mm x 1.25

Just a thought!

Another look at an inch/metric set I used for years. Saves trips back and forth to get the correct screw or bolt. Also keep a set of dies to chase threads if your reusing. McMaster carr 20375A14 UNC/UNF/METRIC ~$36

I have the same ones as the OP, and though I draw the line at using them as jewelry, they are pretty useful. Along with a small set from Griots, they are my go-to tool for verifying thread sizes.

I’m always trying to confirm bolt and nut sizes for the various bikes and cars I own. After reading this thread, I immediately ordered a set online each of UNC/UNF (20375A14 - $34.90) and metric gauges (20375A17 - $34.90) from McMaster Carr. Placed the order today, but this was my response by email:

Thank you for considering McMaster-Carr for your purchase, but we have cancelled your order for the identifiers.
Due to the cost of complying with extensive US export regulations, McMaster-Carr accepts international purchases only from our established international customers.

Major bummer! Would there happen to be someone in the US, for whom it would not be too much trouble, to purchase these on my behalf and forward them on to me? I’m happy to pay all costs in advance, so that there is no financial risk.

Cheers,

Lance.

Lance, If you need help, I will order them for you and forward to you. I have done this for several people in Australia and the UK. PM me if you so desire.

Regards Brian

Ditto for me Lance. The part number I use is on 1 string and has the Metric and standard as I've listed for ~$36 US. The metrics are anodized black and the standard are silver to make it easy to grab the correct one.

Always need another tool or two....

Gentlemen,

I’ve ordered these items from Amazon (Thanks, Will), so I won’t have to impose on you for assistance.

I’ve ordered both sets to maximise the total number of threads included. You can never have enough tools.

Thank you for your kind offers to help me out. I really appreciate it.

All the Best,

Lance
