Re: Hewland LG600 Mark II ready for install

Richard, driving the hewland on the street is a peice of cake once you get used to it, i had a dog box in my lotus seven and now have a sequential dog box fitted and apart from a very tall 2.36 1st gear, its a joy to drive around town, you just have to set your pedals up so you can toe and heel your down shifts,
yes there a little noisy but not that bad you cant live with it, and if it really bothers you, if you ever have the box apart get a couple of thou ground off the top of the cluster gears and it will be as quiet as a mouse, its only the gears bottoming on each other that causes the whine.
and beleive me theres nothing like the feeling of flat shifting up at full throttle as you go past some wally.
one thing to remember with a dog box, dog wear will only occur during engagement, so do not try to be gentle with it, as the slower you change the more wear will occur on the dog rings, basicly treat it as though you hate it, the quicker you change the better, for what its worth, what i do is preload the shift lever slightly just before a change , and as you release the throtle momentarily, as the torque comes off the box it will jump into the next gear before you've had time to think about it.
if you google Hewland , there is a very good artical on there website by the man himself , explaing the best methods of changing gears to promote trans life
enjoy you lucky sod
cheers John

Re: Hewland LG600 Mark II ready for install

Since John has reactivated this old thread of Richard's....

Has anyone heard how he's doing? It's almost a year since his heart attack and six months since he was last seen on here.

Any news of progress towards production of his TRT transaxle?
