Question 930 trans question

Guys

My questions are
1) How much material is typically milled off from the front of the bell housing to shorten it?
2) What exactly is the purpose of this?
3) Is there any down side to doing this?
4) what's the up side to doing this?

I thought I ask the group before calling a trans shop.

Thanks for any help you can give on this subject.

Jim,
In order

1) 30mm

2) to make it the same length as the early "short" 930 so it can fit in an early 911 or a 914

3) Only the extra work, you also obviously need to shorten or obtain the shorter input shaft

4)Gets the motor further back. Helps fitment in a
gt40 but maybe not weight distribution

Cheers
